Risks from toxic information on the internet

On September 30, the Ministry of Education and Training held a training conference to improve the capacity of staff and teachers in charge of child protection in the online environment. The conference was held at a central point in Hanoi, connecting online with 750 educational institutions nationwide with the participation of more than 15,000 staff and teachers.

In her opening speech, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung - Deputy Head of the Department of Students (Ministry of Education and Training) said: Besides the great benefits that technology brings, the online environment also has many potential risks, from harmful information, abuse of personal data, especially for students, and acts that violate children's rights such as bullying, fraud and the risk of internet addiction.

There are currently more than 26 million students nationwide, of which preschool, primary and secondary school students are about 20 million, accounting for 80%. Thus, children are under the management of the education sector, which is a big challenge for the sector in protecting them from bad actors in general and the online environment in particular.

Children and students are vulnerable and need to be equipped with knowledge and skills to protect themselves online. It is the responsibility of schools, families and society to create a healthy and safe online environment, helping children develop comprehensively both physically and mentally.

Implementing Decision No. 830/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister approving the Program "Protecting and supporting children to interact healthily and creatively in the online environment for the period 2021-2025", the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a plan, focusing on many solutions such as: Building and integrating into the education program the education of "digital skills" for students at each level of education.

Develop models and regulations for managing online teaching and learning and provide guidance to schools and teachers on ensuring information security, participating in a safe network environment for teaching and educational management activities; coordinate the development and implementation of technical solutions at schools to monitor, block, and filter access to illegal content and content that is not suitable for students of different ages...

The Ministry of Education and Training has coordinated with relevant units to build a Network for responding to and protecting children on the Internet; operate the Network's electronic information portal, and test the feature of looking up websites that are harmful to children; at the same time, build a Youtube and Facebook channel for the Network for responding to and protecting children on the Internet with the aim of communicating and spreading skills and knowledge about protecting children on the Internet, to contribute to spreading communication to society.

Protect children from harmful agents

In addition to the achieved results, the work of "Protecting and supporting children to interact healthily and creatively in the online environment" still has shortcomings and limitations, such as: Management and organization of cultural and behavioral education for children and students in the online environment have not been strongly implemented. Grasping information, orienting political ideology, ethics, and good lifestyles for children and students is still limited.

Meanwhile, many students spend too much time using smartphones and social networks as an indispensable part of their lives. Early access and lack of control have created a large "playground" for negative behaviors. The number of children and students being abused and bullied online in recent years has tended to increase.

Many teachers have not been properly trained in how to handle media crises or how to provide psychological counseling to victims of cyberbullying. School psychological counseling rooms in many places are still weak and lacking.

To promptly resolve the above difficulties, the Ministry of Education and Training organized training courses to raise awareness among staff, teachers, and those in charge of child protection in general and in the online environment in particular about children's rights and risks in the online environment.

At the same time, it provides the necessary knowledge and skills for teachers and educational administrators to guide and protect children from harmful agents; strengthen coordination between educational units, families and society in ensuring cyber safety for children. The conference is also a forum to discuss and share experiences from effective models, contributing to building a healthy and safe educational environment.

The conference listened to the topic "Identifying and preventing fraud methods in cyberspace" presented by Major Dao Manh Tu, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, Ministry of Public Security; the topic "Guidelines for ensuring information security, participating in a safe network environment for teaching and educational management activities" presented by Dr. Le Hoan, lecturer at the University of Electricity.

With practical experience and scientific research results, the reporters shared specific contents, methods and good practices to help teachers attending the training gain valuable knowledge to apply in practice. Through the training, each teacher and each educational manager better understood their roles and responsibilities and applied the knowledge and skills learned to their actual work.
