Father is a construction worker, mother is illiterate, son is valedictorian
Tran Xuan Dam is currently a student at the School of Information and Communication Technology - Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Sharing with Tuoi Tre newspaper reporter, Dam said that every day he wakes up at 4:30 am to study.
"After school, I eat breakfast and go to school. After school, I help my parents with housework. Usually, I study until 11 p.m. On days when I have too much homework, I have to stay up later to complete my goals."
Dam’s family was in a very difficult situation. His father had passed the teacher training college entrance exam but had to drop out because he couldn’t afford to go to school. His mother was a farmer and illiterate. The whole family depended on the father’s rice field and the money he earned as a construction worker.
In the recent high school graduation exam, Dam got 39/40 points (10 points in math and physics, 9.75 in chemistry, 9.25 in literature).
Receiving a special gift from the "Solid Future" scholarship program, Dam's difficulties have lessened and he has more motivation to reach his dream.
Shouldering the future of the whole family
Le Thi Hau, a student at the University of Education , Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is the second runner-up in block C00 at Hoang Mai High School (Nghe An). Her high school graduation exam score was 28.75 points.
Hau is a model of resilience in overcoming adversity. Her father passed away and her mother suffered from stage 3 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Last year, an unfortunate medication error left her mother in poor health requiring oxygen therapy and completely losing her ability to work.
All family expenses depend on the family's monthly allowance of just over 700,000 VND. If he does not continue studying, Hau will not have the opportunity to support his mother and will not be able to fulfill his dream.

Hau shared that what he worries most is that his mother at home cannot take care of herself.
"My mother cooks a pot of porridge to eat all day... My family's situation is the motivation for me to keep going and try hard in my studies...", Hau said, choking back tears.
Dinh Quang Hiep, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, was not as lucky as his friends.
In 2017, Hiep had an accident, suffered multiple injuries, and underwent dozens of surgeries, causing his already poor family to become poor. Hiep went from being a good student to a disabled student, living with the after-effects.
