According to legend, in ancient times, people did not know how to plow and plant rice, but lived only on natural products. The riverside areas were enriched with alluvium each time the floodwaters rose. King Hung saw that this land was good, so he called upon his people to find ways to build banks to protect the water. The king saw that wild rice was growing abundantly, so he taught people how to preserve seeds, sow seedlings, and when the seedlings grew green, plant them in water-rich fields. Since then, every year at the beginning of the crop, the people of Minh Nong held the Tich Dien (going to the fields) ceremony to express gratitude for King Hung's great contributions.
