3. Activities to enjoy autumn at Mount Fuji
3.1. Mountain climbing
Climbing Mount Fuji is the best way to enjoy the beauty of autumn. There are two main routes to climb the mountain: the Yoshida route and the Subashiri route. Prepare your climbing equipment and plan to wake up early to start your climb at dawn to enjoy the sunrise at the summit.
The Yoshida Trail is by far the most famous of the four routes to conquer Mount Fuji in Japan. (Photo: Collected)
Yoshida Road
- Preliminary information about the Yoshida trail • Starts at Fuji-Subaru Line Station 5 – 2,300 m above sea level • Trail up: The trail is 5.8 km long. The ascent takes about five to seven hours. There are many facilities along the way. • Descent: The trail is 6.9 km long. Descent time is approximately three to five hours. No mountain lodges/limited facilities • The way up the mountain and the way down the mountain are two separate paths.
-Route overview The Yoshida Trail is by far the most popular of the four, with nearly three times as many climbers as the second most popular Fujinomiya Trail. From the 5th to 7th stations, the route is a winding path with a gentle slope. After the 7th station, the route becomes a little more rocky, and from the 8th station, the route merges with the Subashiri Trail both up and down. This area can get congested, especially in the hours before sunrise.
The Subashiri Trail has sections surrounded by trees and some very beautiful scenery. (Photo: Collected)
Subashiri Road
- Preliminary information about the Subashiri trail • This trail starts at Subashiri Station 5 – 1,970 m above sea level • The way up the mountain: it will take about five to seven hours to get there and the first half of the way is covered by trees. • Downhill: the descent takes about two and a half to four hours, this is an interesting stretch, you can run down from station number 7 • The way up the mountain and the way down the mountain are two separate paths.
-Route overview Subashiri is one of the lesser traveled routes, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. The first half of the climb (up to around the 7th station) takes you through a densely forested area with plenty of shade to keep you out of the sun. The route features long stretches of volcanic sand and gravel on the way down the mountain and can be traversed very quickly. Note that the trail merges with the more popular Yoshida Trail past the 8th station and this can lead to some slow-downs and congestion at the summit at sunrise. Luckily, you can see the sunrise from anywhere along the Subashiri trail once you’re above the tree line.
