He suffered this injury in the second leg of the semi-final between Vietnam and Singapore at Viet Tri Stadium in late December 2024. Initially, doctors diagnosed Tan Tai with only a contusion of the ligament, not a rupture, so no surgery was needed.

But on the morning of January 13, after a re-examination, Tan Tai was diagnosed with a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee, a torn meniscus and needed surgery. The reason for the misdiagnosis was that after the match against Singapore, there was still a lot of fluid in Tan Tai's knee, blood clots and muscle tension, causing the X-ray images to be inaccurate.

On January 13, VFF leaders and Binh Duong Club discussed and agreed on the best treatment and recovery plan for Tan Tai. Both sides decided to have the defender born in 1997 undergo surgery in Ho Chi Minh City. After 4 days, he will move to physical therapy and recovery at RTD Rehab Center with Vietnam national team doctor Tran Huy Tho. It is expected that he can return to the field after 8-9 months.
