The Reunification Express departs from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi or vice versa, departing daily, with a route of 1,726km.
According to Lonely Planet: "This is one of Southeast Asia's most beloved rail routes, and also among the world's most impressive overnight train experiences. There's no better way to reach Vietnam's two biggest cities, as the train runs through historic urban areas and glides along majestic coastlines."
Following the Reunification train, in the top 10 are the following train lines: California Zephyr (USA), Lake Titicaca Train (Peru), Beijing-Lhasa Express (China), TranzAlpine (New Zealand), Bergensbanen (Norway), Tazara (Tanzania and Zambia), Sunset Limited (USA), Caledonian Sleeper (UK) and Mombasa-Nairobi (Kenya).
The itineraries are selected based on the following criteria: breathtaking landscapes; cultural-historical values; unique experiences; connectivity and discovery; and the ability to inspire sustainable tourism .

Lonely Planet describes these slow travel itineraries as offering a completely new perspective on each destination, from passing through peaceful countryside to connecting major cities. Previously, the travel publication, which was founded in 1973 and has a large global readership, also honored the Reunification train in the top 10 most beautiful train journeys on the planet in 2018.
