TP - For over 10 years, teacher Le Thi Bich Thuy's charity class has regularly brought letters to children in difficult circumstances who are illiterate.

The charity class of teacher Thuy (Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy, 67 years old) is located in the campus of the Thanh Phu Commune Community Learning Center (Cai Nuoc District, Ca Mau ). Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, the sounds of children of different ages spelling letters resound. In this class, there are 15-16 year old children who are only in grade 1, and 8-9 year old children who are in grades 3 and 4.

As a former primary school teacher at a communal school, Ms. Thuy understands the situation of the students here. Since 2013, Ms. Thuy has not been afraid of wind and rain to maintain the charity class. During all those years, she cannot remember how many generations of students she has taught. The teacher is happy when the students graduate and have stable jobs, and often calls to ask about her health and the situation of the class...

Ms. Thuy said that there are currently 31 students studying here. Most of them are poor and do not have access to education. Many students are very special, some are orphans living with elderly and sick grandparents; some are young but have to earn a living by collecting scrap, selling lottery tickets, and working as hired laborers. There are cases where 3 grandmothers and grandchildren, and 3 mothers and children sit in the same class.

Since the charity class was established, many poor children who were illiterate have now learned to read, write, and calculate. For those who can get the proper paperwork, Ms. Thuy has been running around to help them get into many schools in the area.

Teacher Le Thi Bich Thuy's charity class has 31 students of different ages, the youngest student is 8 years old, the oldest is 65 years old. Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy used to be a teacher, then became the President of the Commune Women's Union, retired and took on the role of President of the Thanh Phu Commune Education Promotion Association (Cai Nuoc District) until now.

“What motivates me to come to this class is love. Just because of poverty, the children have to struggle with life too early and leave their education unfinished, which is too pitiful and too disadvantaged. If they are not cared for and nurtured, I fear that as they grow older, education will become further away from them. Education is the key to open the door for students to move forward in life to be better in the future.”

As the oldest student in the class, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh (65 years old, Luong The Tran commune, Cai Nuoc district) said that she used to take her two grandchildren to school, but she realized that she could not read and write, so she asked to learn to read and write to teach them. “In the past, my parents were poor and had many children, so they could not study properly. At that time, I was only in grade 2, and there was no boat to go, so I had to quit. Now my grandchildren are old enough to go to school, but I cannot read and write to help them, so I asked Ms. Ba Thuy to come to school to “review” the letters,” Mrs. Binh shared.
