Northern weather forecast to continue to have widespread heavy rain

VietNamNetVietNamNet04/08/2023

On August 4, Mr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (General Department of Hydrometeorology) said that the reason many places in the South and Central Highlands had rainfall exceeding historical values in July was due to the influence of the strong tropical convergence zone in the North combined with the strong southwest monsoon, causing a lot of rain in the southern regions of our country.

Additionally, with global warming causing more water evaporation into the atmosphere, stronger convection is also causing extreme heavy rainfall.

“The indirect cause is the impact of the El Nino phenomenon. However, this phenomenon often has a delay of 2-3 months in our country. El Nino is not like the weather , but is a large-scale phenomenon with long-term impacts, lasting for many months,” said Mr. Tuan.

Due to the influence of the strong tropical convergence zone in the North combined with the strong southwest monsoon, it has caused a lot of rain in the southern regions of our country.

According to Mr. Tuan, El Nino increases the volatility of rain in Vietnam, such as in 2015 in Quang Ninh, there was historic heavy rain at the end of July; in 2002, heavy rain appeared and caused major floods in the Red River and Thai Binh River areas; major floods in the Central region at the end of September, including historic floods in the upper reaches of the Ca River (Ha Tinh); and prolonged major floods occurred in the Mekong Delta.

Mr. Tuan commented that from now until the end of August 2023, there is a possibility of 2-3 storms and tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea and directly affecting the Northern and North Central regions.

“During the period from now until August 31, the tropical convergence zone will continue to operate in combination with the southwest monsoon, causing strong winds and large waves in the southern seas. Therefore, fishermen need to pay attention to maritime and fishing activities to prevent dangers to human life and property.

In addition, dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and hail continue to appear nationwide, which can greatly affect production and people's activities," said Mr. Tuan.

Mr. Tuan stated that the main cause of the heavy rain was the activity of a low-pressure trough passing through the Northern region, combined with high winds that continuously increased humidity in the Western region, thereby causing heavy to very heavy rains in recent days.

In the coming time, the low pressure trough entering the Northern region is forecast to continue to be active. In addition, on the morning of August 4, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also observed that the low pressure area is intensifying over the northeastern border region.

“From now until August 8, moderate to heavy rain will continue to occur in the Northern region, especially in the northern border provinces,” Mr. Tuan predicted.

In addition, from August 5-7, due to the activity of the low pressure trough, there is a possibility of strong thunderstorms and tornadoes in the Northern region.

From now until August 8, moderate to heavy rain will continue to occur over a wide area in the Northern region.

Regarding the heat forecast, Mr. Tuan said that in the Northern region, August will still see hot days combined with rains. In particular, in the first half of August, there will likely be days of intense heat.

In the Central region, the heat wave may last until mid-August. By the end of August, the heat wave in this region will gradually ease.
