On September 10, information from the People's Committee of Nghe An province said that the province has decided to reclaim 67.5 hectares of land in Vinh Phu and Vinh Hung wards and Nghi Loc commune to implement the project of extending the runway of Vinh International Airport to 3 km.
The project "Extending the Runway - Vinh International Airport" proposed by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), with a total investment of more than 545 billion VND, aims to extend the existing runway by 600 m, increasing the total length to 3 km, thereby meeting the conditions to receive wide-body, long-range aircraft, often operating on international or transcontinental routes such as Boeing 787, 777 or Airbus A350.
According to the plan, the project will complete investment policy procedures and feasibility study report in the third quarter of 2025, approve construction drawing design in the fourth quarter of 2025 and complete construction within 6 months from the handover of the site.
The extension of the runway to 3 km is considered to have strategic significance, opening up opportunities to attract international flights, increasing operating frequency and enhancing the position of Vinh airport, one of the most important airports in the North Central region.
Currently, Vinh International Airport has only one runway 2.4 km long and 45 m wide, with a scale only suitable for operating narrow-body aircraft such as A320/A321 (code C aircraft) or equivalent.
