Conduct monitoring of prescription antibiotic sales at drug retail establishments

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 1121/QD-TTg approving the national strategy on prevention and control of antibiotic resistance in Vietnam for the 2023-2030 period, with a vision to 2045.

The general goal is to slow down the progression of drug resistance and prevent and control the spread of drug-resistant microorganisms and infectious diseases; at the same time, ensure the availability and continuity of antimicrobial drugs and the rational use of antimicrobial drugs to effectively treat infectious diseases in humans and animals, contributing to the protection, care and improvement of human and animal health, environmental protection and socio -economic development of the country.

From now until 2030, the strategy sets out four goals: raising awareness among local authorities and understanding among health workers, veterinarians and the public about preventing and combating antimicrobial resistance; strengthening the antimicrobial resistance surveillance system to provide timely warnings about the emergence, spread, levels and trends of antimicrobial resistance in microorganisms; reducing the spread of microorganisms and infectious diseases; and using antimicrobials in humans and animals rationally, safely and responsibly.

The strategy strives to basically control drug resistance by 2045, have a system to monitor drug resistance, and use and consume antibiotics effectively on par with developed countries.

To achieve the above goals, the strategy sets out a number of key tasks and solutions, including the development and implementation of action plans for each sector of health, agriculture, environment, and industry and trade to address the causes of drug resistance in the respective sectors.

The strategy emphasizes communication, education, and raising public awareness of the causes of antibiotic resistance, consequences of antibiotic resistance, and measures to prevent and combat antibiotic resistance; maintaining individual and social commitment to behavioral change for responsible use of antibiotics, and stopping the abuse and misuse of antibiotics.

Develop clinical pharmacy work, implement antibiotic use management programs, manage prescriptions and prescription drug sales; monitor prescription antibiotic sales at drug retail facilities.

Strategy to implement 3 key projects: Project on raising community awareness, strengthening the national surveillance system on antibiotic resistance, use and consumption of antimicrobial drugs, strengthening the management of antibiotic use in medicine in the period of 2024 - 2030 developed and implemented by the Ministry of Health; Project on raising community awareness, strengthening the national surveillance system on antibiotic resistance, use and consumption of antimicrobial drugs, strengthening the management of antibiotic use in veterinary medicine in the period of 2024 - 2030 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development); Project on monitoring antibiotic resistance in the environment in the period of 2024 - 2030 (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment).
