The talent of a coach is obvious, but Mr. Chung has a quality that is greater than talent, which is the true love for female players who are at a disadvantage compared to male players. Worrying, caring for, protecting his female players, gradually leading them on the path of professional football, never taking his ego as the standard, but always taking the progress of the team he leads as the goal to strive for, Coach Mai Duc Chung has been considered by all the female players as their beloved father. And so, teaching or coaching the female team becomes a family story, full of love and responsibility.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan replaces Philippe Troussier to lead Vietnam U.23 team to compete in the 2024 AFC U.23 Championship
Coach Mai Duc Chung's saying that I find very meaningful to Vietnamese football is: "We must also consider football as a profession, not just playing for fun."
As a profession, the first factor must be professionalism from every player. That professionalism must be led, taught, cared for, and gradually improved by the head coach. For a player, professionalism must go from consciousness to unconsciousness, it goes into every move of the player. Looking back, the loss of the Vietnamese team against Indonesia showed the amateurism of the Vietnamese defender. When head coach Troussier chose Minh Trong under 23 years old as a central defender, he must have known the level of professionalism of this player, not just any young player to be put in the national team.
Coach Mai Duc Chung puts a lot of effort into Vietnamese women's football
2023 is the first time the Vietnamese women's team will participate in the Women's World Cup.
There is a comment by coach Mai Duc Chung about Vietnamese players that we need to think about: "Players abroad practice in a professional, scientific and advanced environment, so we do not need to watch them practice, but need to evaluate them in matches. I think that is the best thing. If we do not have the conditions, we should invite players back to Vietnam to select and evaluate accurately."
When putting professionalism first, the coach must know to what extent each of his players lacks professionalism in order to promptly make up for it. Especially when using young players, the attention to them must be twice as much as that of veteran players, and must correctly evaluate their real abilities and their development direction in order to make the right choice, especially in important matches of the team.
Because of such love and high sense of responsibility, Mr. Mai Duc Chung was able to affirm his strength as a coach: "I still have responsibility for female players, for Vietnamese women's football. Although I am old, I can still participate in discussions, give professional advice... to improve Vietnamese women's football. Especially with coaches and athletes, I always remind them to have passion and enthusiasm. I am like a teacher, a father, an uncle, a friend...".
Because the Vietnamese men's football team is currently lacking such a dedicated coach, Vietnamese men's football is declining in a very sad and worrying way.
All those who love Vietnamese football are hoping that VFF will find a person with heart and vision to lead the men's and women's football teams. Because coach Mai Duc Chung, after a very long time of dedicating himself to women's football, has said goodbye. A beautiful farewell!
