Reorganizing rubber production in the West

Rubber is one of the industrial crops and key products of Lam Dong, but the development of this crop in recent times has still lacked stability.

Rubber
Lam Dong currently has 74,400 hectares of rubber trees.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong, the total rubber area of the province is currently 74,400 hectares, of which 70,300 hectares have a harvest output of over 63,800 tons by the end of August, equivalent to 52% of the yearly plan.

Currently, although prices have not changed much, the export market is gradually recovering, especially the Chinese market, helping to maintain rubber latex prices at a fairly good level. Thanks to that, local people are still persistent in taking good care of their existing gardens, while at the same time, promoting expansion in areas with suitable cultivation conditions. This is a positive signal showing the awareness and correct actions of people to stabilize the crop structure, avoiding excessive market chasing.

Mrs. Pham Thi Hien's family in Quang Tin commune currently has 1 hectare of rubber. According to Mrs. Hien, although the price of rubber latex in recent years has not been as expected by the family, she still perseveres in taking care of the garden. Because she believes that this is a crop that can be harvested for a long time, from 15 to 20 years. Mrs. Hien said that in fact, taking care of rubber trees is not too difficult and does not require much strength.

To overcome the period of falling rubber prices, the family reduced investment in fertilizers and changed the tapping regime from D2, which means tapping latex every 2 days, to D3, D4, which means tapping latex every 3-4 days, to reduce labor costs. The good news is that since the beginning of 2025, rubber latex prices have tended to increase.

According to the leader of Dak Sin Commune People's Committee, rubber trees suitable to local soil conditions have been planted and maintained by local people for decades. In the face of market fluctuations, the commune government has encouraged people to maintain rubber acreage in suitable areas to balance the crop structure and develop stable production. Many households have maintained their rubber acreage.

According to the functional sector, the development of Lam Dong rubber industry has not yet reached the expectation due to the lack of sustainable connection between enterprises and farmers, and over-dependence on some markets. The number of deep processing enterprises is still small, and the scale and technology application of some facilities are still modest.

Many opinions say that the "bottleneck" of this problem is from the production organization which is still fragmented, small-scale, lacking connections, not meeting the requirements of concentrated commodity production, and not forming raw material areas according to the value chain.

The rubber industry still has high production costs, unstable product quality, and has not yet met the requirements of the import market and the increasing domestic consumption. To solve the above-mentioned bottlenecks and bottlenecks, the province is focusing on implementing fundamental solutions such as reorganizing production according to the industry value chain.

In particular, the functional sectors and localities plan and develop large-scale raw material areas, producing goods according to high standards and quality. At the same time, reduce rubber acreage in unsuitable areas to improve production efficiency.

The provincial agricultural sector recommends that farmers should maintain rubber plantations in areas where the trees grow well and produce high quality latex. Farmers should only liquidate and switch to other crops for old, diseased rubber plantations.

Farmers also need to replant rubber gardens that have reached their peak. For replanting, farmers need to use grafted rubber varieties that are high yielding, disease resistant, and drought tolerant. Farmers need to have reasonable regulation in rubber care to maintain latex quality and yield.
