Reduced supply, especially in the Lam Dong growing area, is said to be the reason for the sharp increase in prices of many vegetables.

Leafy vegetable prices increased sharply

Recorded on September 27, at Ba Chieu market (HCMC), most types of green vegetables increased in price sharply, some even increased surprisingly.

Accordingly, amaranth, which was previously about 7,000 VND/bunch, now increased to 10,000 VND/bunch; lettuce doubled, from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg to more than 40,000 VND/kg; green cabbage increased from 20,000 VND to 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, tomatoes from 20,000 VND/kg to about 35,000 VND/kg...

According to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Buoi, a vegetable seller, since the storms and rains have lasted for a long time, many vegetables have been damaged, the supply has decreased, so the prices of many vegetables have been forced to increase. In particular, although lettuce has a high price, a large amount of goods have been damaged due to the rain, causing the vegetables to be waterlogged, broken, and unable to be preserved as before.

"Almost all types of vegetables have increased in price, none have maintained their prices. Mustard greens, lettuce, and water spinach are the groups with the strongest increases," said Ms. Buoi.

The goods at Ba Chieu market are mainly sourced from Thu Duc agricultural and food wholesale market and gardeners from the old Lam Dong province. When wholesale prices increase, small traders like her have no other choice.

Due to the unfavorable weather, the amount of imported goods has also decreased. Ms. Buoi said she only dared to import sparingly, less than usual because "there is no more goods to import".

Similarly, Ms. Tran Le Thanh, a vegetable vendor at Ba Chieu market, said that prices of vegetables such as tomatoes, cauliflower, and cabbage have all increased sharply.

According to Ms. Thanh, in general, the price of the type that increases slightly will increase by 5,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, and the price of the type that increases strongly will double.

Prices increase but the market is deserted

Ms. Pham Thi Luyen (living in Nhieu Loc area, Ho Chi Minh City) said she was "startled" when going to the market these past few days because the prices of cucumbers, lettuce... all doubled.

Another trader at Tan Dinh market (HCMC) shared that although he imported a small amount of goods, the high input prices caused the capital to increase, the capital was high but the profit was low. In addition, heavy rains caused people to limit going to the market, slowing down sales.

In contrast to vegetables, pork prices are showing a slight downward trend.

Specifically, information from Binh Dien food wholesale market (HCMC), the price of pork (slaughtered, headless) at the beginning of the market was 68,000 VND/kg but decreased by 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg in the early morning. Pork for sows was 51,000 VND/kg at the beginning of the market, decreased by 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg at the end of the market.

According to many sellers at retail markets in Ho Chi Minh City, compared to a few days ago, retail pork prices have generally decreased by about 4,000 - 7,000 VND/kg. The main reason is that the price of live pigs tends to decrease, and purchasing power is low.
