The 2025 high school graduation exam will have many changes compared to before. With the number of exam subjects reduced to only 4, schools will have to calculate and adjust the subject combinations for admission to suit these changes.
Build a compulsory combination of Math or Literature
In 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training finalized the high school graduation exam plan with 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Literature, Math and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 (Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology).
With this plan, from 2025, candidates taking the high school graduation exam will have 2 subjects reduced compared to the current high school graduation exam. The combined exam of Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civic Education ) will no longer exist. This is also the first time that Information Technology and Technology will be included as elective subjects in the high school graduation exam from 2025.
With the number of subjects and selection methods as above, there are up to 36 ways to choose subjects for the high school graduation exam from 2025.
At the same time, the Ministry also announced and solicited comments on the draft circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the regulations on admission to university and college levels in preschool education.
In particular, the draft includes amendments to the subject combination for admission consideration. Accordingly, with the admission method based on academic results and exam results for each subject (including: total scores of high school subjects, high school graduation exam scores, foreign language certificates and other assessment results), the subject combination for admission consideration includes at least 3 subjects suitable to the characteristics and requirements of the training program, of which there must be Math or Literature with the assessment weight accounting for at least 1/3 of the total score.
A training program, major, or group of majors can use several subject combinations for admission purposes at the same time, in which case the total number of subjects in the combinations must have an assessment weight of at least 50% of the total score. In case of using high school study results for admission purposes, the candidate's entire 12th grade study results must be used.
Thus, universities build a combination of subjects for admission including at least 3 subjects, in which Literature or Math is compulsory and the remaining subjects need to be suitable to the characteristics and requirements of the training industry.
Change the subject combination for admission
With the above number of subjects and subject selection methods, in 2025 there will be up to 36 ways to choose subjects for the high school graduation exam. Therefore, universities will have to calculate and adjust the admission combination to suit the 2018 General Education Program.
Up to this point, a number of universities have announced their expected adjustments to the admission combination for the 2025 admission season.
A notable new point in the 2025 enrollment plan of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) is that the school uses 4 groups of subjects for admission applicable to all majors/specializations, all admission methods, including: Math - English - Literature, Math - English - Physics, Math - English - Informatics, Math - English - Economic and Legal Education.
Thus, in the 2 new combinations, the school uses 2 new subjects of the 2018 General Education Program: Information Technology and Economic and Legal Education.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education has also just announced important changes in the planned enrollment plan for 2025. In particular, the school will adjust the admission combination to match the high school graduation exam subjects, while maintaining the admission combinations of 2024.
The school will adjust the combinations that are no longer suitable, such as eliminating combinations with exams in Natural Sciences , Social Sciences, etc. and adding new combinations with subjects in Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.
In 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will maintain 3 stable admission methods: Talent selection; Thinking assessment test results (expected quota to increase slightly); High school graduation exam results (expected quota to decrease from 50% to 40%).
Speaking to reporters of Dai Doan Ket Newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien - Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that the school's admission combinations remain stable, unchanged compared to 2024. According to Mr. Dien, the admission subject combinations of Hanoi University of Science and Technology include traditional, core subjects, ensuring good input quality and suitable for the characteristics and requirements of the training majors.
