'I will try to study for a PhD'

On the morning of August 25, Nha Trang University held a graduation ceremony and awarded degrees to 92 new PhDs and Masters.

At the graduation ceremony, among the young people, there was a 74-year-old student named Mr. Nguyen Anh (living in Nha Trang City). With a radiant face when holding his MBA degree in hand, Mr. Anh shared: "I am so happy to be present at today's ceremony. After many days of searching, researching, and studying hard, I have fulfilled my dream."

Mr. Anh used to be a construction supervisor, after retiring, he stayed home to help his wife sell goods. But with his studious nature, he was determined to apply for a master's degree at Nha Trang University. "At first, many people said that at this age, I should stay home and rest, why study so hard and for nothing, but my wife and children were very supportive. I study to gain more knowledge, regardless of age, and also to be an example for my children and grandchildren to follow," Mr. Anh happily said.

Returning to the lecture hall, age seems to be a big pressure, but for Mr. Anh, it is not too difficult because he has studied and has many different degrees. When he was young, he graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, then worked in many different agencies. From the time he started working until his retirement, he continued to study remotely and graduated in accounting at Tra Vinh University, then in law at Vinh University. Most recently, in 2023, he also received a bachelor's degree in English at Hue University. In addition, Mr. Anh also completed the lawyer training program organized by the Judicial Academy (Ministry of Justice). All the degrees he has, as he shared, are just to gain more knowledge for himself.

Dedicated master's degree to wife

The master's thesis that Mr. Anh chose to defend was "Factors affecting the intention to consume functional foods of the elderly in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province". The reason for doing the above topic, according to Mr. Anh, is because he has many diseases and often uses functional foods. On the other hand, the elderly today are also using a lot of these foods. To do the above thesis, he had to find a lot of documents from the internet as well as learn more from reality. "Luckily, I defended it successfully, all 5 people in the thesis evaluation council agreed," he said.

On the day he received his master's degree, he felt very happy, but he could not hide his sadness because his beloved wife, who accompanied him throughout the long journey, had just passed away 2 months ago. "My wife is the one who always took care of me and took care of the housework so that I could study with peace of mind. Her passing made me feel lost and very sad, now I am alone because my children have all moved out. I would like to dedicate this degree today to my beloved wife," Mr. Anh emotionally shared.

Mr. Anh said his next plan is to study for a doctorate. “As long as I am healthy and alert, I will continue studying,” he said.

A representative of Nha Trang University said that Mr. Nguyen Anh is the oldest person to ever study and graduate with a master’s degree here. He will be an inspiration and a role model for young people in the spirit of continuous learning.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Kim Long, Deputy Dean in charge of the Faculty of Economics , Nha Trang University, commented that although Mr. Anh is old, he is very diligent, hard-working and eager to learn. This has proven that age is not a barrier to learning and acquiring knowledge.

Nha Trang University is currently training 19 master's degree programs and 11 doctoral degree programs. As of August 20, 2024, the school has trained and awarded degrees to 114 doctorates and 4,147 masters.

At the graduation ceremony on the morning of August 25, 6 PhD students in the fields of aquaculture, seafood processing technology, post-harvest technology, and seafood exploitation were awarded doctoral degrees by the school; 86 students received master's degrees in the fields of biotechnology, aquaculture, food technology, information technology, mechanical engineering (heat and refrigeration engineering), development economics, economic management, business administration, tourism and travel services management, and accounting.
