US President Joe Biden attends a trilateral meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru in Lima, Peru, on November 15.

Mr. Biden said this may be his last meeting with the trilateral group he has worked to build over the past year. However, Mr. Biden stressed that this US-Japan-South Korea partnership “is built to last. That is my hope and expectation.”

Mr. Biden also warned about North Korea's "dangerous and destabilizing cooperation with Russia," amid growing concerns about Pyongyang sending troops to Russia to fight against Ukraine, according to AFP.

The White House announced that the three leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea will announce the establishment of a secretariat to formalize the alliance initiated last year at a trilateral summit in the United States.

Mr Biden's trip to the APEC summit in Peru and the G20 summit in Brazil next week has been overshadowed by Mr Trump's victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential election.

Mr. Marco Rubio becomes US Secretary of State, what will foreign policy be like?

Mr Trump's "America First" agenda threatens to tear apart US alliances as it did during his first term, although the appointment of China hardliners by Republicans in his new cabinet means he may still want to rely on Seoul and Tokyo, according to AFP.

President Biden is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit on November 16 (Peru time).
