Ho Chi Minh City: Nearly 1,000 high school students enthusiastically compete in basketball

On June 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and Phong Son Sports Company held the opening ceremony of a basketball tournament for high school students in Ho Chi Minh City. Nearly 1,000 10th and 11th graders divided into 40 boys' teams and 17 girls' teams will participate in the tournament, which will take place from now until the end of July 2024.

According to Mr. Duong Tri Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, students will compete according to the 2020 FIBA ​​basketball rules, divided into group stage and knockout round.

"The basketball tournament not only creates a useful and interesting playground for students during the summer. We also hope that the tournament will contribute to improving their health and sportsmanship .

At the same time, it is an opportunity for us to search, train and nurture basketball talents for the future, contributing to the task of developing "10 core competencies of students" - Mr. Dung emphasized.

Proposal to organize sports tournaments in the summer

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , most of the students participating in the 2024 basketball tournament said they were very excited about this tournament.

"Because in the summer, students are not busy with schoolwork, exams, and tests. We have more time to practice and watch other schools compete. Watching other schools compete is an exciting time and I also learn a lot from it" - NMT, an 11th grade student in Tan Binh district, explained.

Similarly, Ms. H.Th., a parent whose son will participate in the 2024 basketball tournament, commented: "I suggest that all sports tournaments, including the Phu Dong Sports Festival at all levels, should be held in the summer. This will be more convenient for students. My child is very passionate about sports, but every time there is a tournament during the school year, I consider it carefully."
