Tran Thanh: I'm sad when 'The Guardian Quartet' receives negative comments

Director Tran Thanh said he was sad when the Tet movie "The Four Guardians" was "intentionally criticized negatively by some people", hoping the audience would not compare it with "Mai".

On the occasion of Tet At Ty, the work written, directed and produced by Tran Thanh caused a stir when it reached over 200 billion VND after 5 days of release. However, many audiences commented that the film had disjointed content and the script was worse than Tomorrow (2024). On some community sites about cinema, many articles claim that The Four Panthers is "Tran Thanh's worst" movie and is widely agreed upon by viewers.

On the afternoon of February 3, Tran Thanh said that in the past few days, he has read and listened to many comments from the public. The director accepts all compliments and criticisms, but hopes that viewers will evaluate more fairly and objectively.

Tran Thanh explains The Four Panthers belongs to the rom-com (romantic comedy) genre, different from the psychological-drama color of the three previous films, suitable for viewers with a happy, comfortable mindset. "I hope they go to the cinema without having to think about things that are too complicated or sad, and have a relaxing Tet with their relatives and family. But, perhaps the three previous films impressed the audience, so this film received many mixed reactions," he said.

The producer affirmed his efforts to polish every stage, from equipment setup, artistic setting to music , camera angles, film color, and dialogue. He also trained three new faces - Ky Duyen, Tieu Vy, and Quoc Anh in acting. "I dare not neglect or be careless in any stage. Whether it's comedy or political, I still want to promote the ideological value of the work, contributing to spreading positive energy to the community," the director said.

Despite the sadness, he was happy that the work was supported by a segment of viewers. As of the afternoon of February 3, the film had reached two million viewers. The 38-year-old director said he took note of the comments and would do better in the next film.

After the press screening before Tet, Tran Thanh commented that the script was still too full of love. "I wish the movie could be a little more comedic. But everything happens for a reason, that will be an experience for me. Therefore, I just tell myself: Be happy to accept it," he said.

The film revolves around the main character Quynh Anh (Tieu Vy), a beautiful girl who has always been lucky since childhood. She is attached to her boyfriend Quoc Anh (Quoc Anh), and the two live together. Disagreements about lifestyle gradually arise, which is also when she suspects her lover is having an affair with Karen (Ky Duyen).

Writer Duong Binh Nguyen - author of many literature books - commented that the film is long-winded, predictable, and the director's weakest work since his career. According to him, The Godfather, Mrs. Nu's House, Mai - The director's previous films - revolve around family tragedy, love in adversity, touching the psychology of a large Vietnamese audience. The Four Guardians , he pursued the American romantic comedy script motif. The author believes that this is Tran Thanh's boldness, but when the director has lost his "weapon" in previous films, the comedy element cannot make up for the bland story of the love triangle.
