This year's discussion took place in the evening, so after three hours of conversation, moderator Fyodor Lukyanov had to comment that "it's almost midnight", but the Russian leader continued to receive questions.
Russia's TASS news agency has compiled some key points in Russian President Putin's speech at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club. The World and Vietnam Newspaper respectfully introduces them to readers.
New World Order
The world is witnessing the emergence of a completely new world order, unlike that of the past, such as the Westphalian or Yalta systems.
New powers are emerging. Nations are becoming more aware of their interests, values, uniqueness and identity, and are increasingly determined to pursue development and justice goals.
At the same time, societies face a myriad of new challenges, from exciting technological changes to catastrophic natural disasters, from unjustified social divisions to massive migrations and severe economic crises.
Given the dynamics of ongoing global processes, the next two decades of human history could be even more difficult than the last 20: the threat of new regional conflicts, global pandemics, complex and controversial ethical aspects of the interaction between humans and artificial intelligence, and how tradition and progress can be reconciled.
The world is moving not so much towards polycentricity, but towards “polyphony” where every voice is heard. Those who have a habit of “performing solo” and want to do so in the future will have to get used to the new “world music”.
There should not be a situation where the model of one country or a relatively small part of humanity is considered universal and imposed globally.
The world needs Russia
Neither the United States nor Europe can change the fact that the world needs Russia. Moscow needs everyone to understand that pressure is useless, but Russia is always ready to negotiate if there is full consideration of each other's legitimate interests.
Russia also does not regard Western civilization as an enemy, and Moscow's policy has never promoted the principles of "either us or them" or "whoever is not with us is against us."
Besides, Russia does not seek to teach anyone a lesson or "impose its thinking on anyone."
' Geopolitical greed'
In the pursuit of its interests, the West misinterpreted what it saw as the results of the Cold War and began to reshape the world to its liking. It is this “geopolitical greed” that is the real reason behind recent global conflicts from the Middle East to Ukraine.
Once the United States and other Western countries accept Moscow's position, it will be necessary to acknowledge the undeniable fact that hegemony is unacceptable in the new world order. A new world system will emerge, suitable for the challenges of the future.
However, the racist ideology has been deeply ingrained in the minds of many people and this is also a serious mental obstacle to global harmonious development and sooner or later, the West will also realize this.
Ukrainian reconciliation
There can be no good-neighborly relations between Russia and Ukraine without Kiev's neutrality. |
Russia was forced to launch a special military operation in Ukraine because the West brought the situation in the Eastern European country to a coup. And now there can be no good neighborly relations between Russia and Ukraine without Kiev's neutrality.
This is also the main prerequisite to ensure that Ukraine does not become a tool in the hands of others. Without this condition, it is impossible to establish the basic preconditions for normalization of relations, which will lead to the situation developing in an unpredictable scenario that Russia is very keen to avoid.
Moscow argues that the border between the two sides should run along the new line, including areas in eastern Ukraine that joined Russia after a referendum.
Russia is also ready to negotiate peace with Ukraine, but not based on "Kiev's monthly changing wish list" but on the actual situation and the agreements reached in Istanbul, Türkiye in 2022.
In addition, Moscow believes that Ukraine does not need a temporary ceasefire just to buy time for weapons transfer, but needs to create favorable conditions to restore relations and cooperation in the future for the benefit of the two peoples.
Relations with the United States
Russian President Putin congratulated Donald Trump on becoming the US president-elect and affirmed that he will work "with any head of state" who is trusted by the American people.
What Mr. Trump has said publicly about his desire to restore relations with Russia or contribute to ending the conflict in Ukraine deserves attention from Moscow.
However, Mr. Trump will hardly propose that Moscow ally against Beijing, because this is unrealistic, when the relationship between Russia and China has reached "unprecedented levels of trust, cooperation and friendship."
Cooperation with China and India
For China, its relationship with Russia as an ally is at its highest level in history, based on mutual trust, which Moscow lacks in its relations with the West.
Beijing pursues a policy of absolute balance with Moscow, and cooperation between the two sides in general, and military and defense cooperation in particular, is aimed at strengthening the security of Russia and China, not at third countries.
As for India, it deserves to be included in the list of global superpowers, "with a population of one and a half billion, the fastest growth rate among all the economies in the world, an ancient culture and very good growth prospects in the future".
Russia is developing relations with India, a great country, in all directions. In the security and defense sphere, our relations are developing and there is a great level of trust.
BRICS Outlook
The BRICS group of leading emerging economies is the prototype of "modern, free and non-bloc relations between states and peoples, and a prime example of truly constructive cooperation in the new global context."
Today, even members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have shown interest in working closely with BRICS, and it is not excluded that in the future other countries will also consider working more closely with the group.
However, it is still too early to consider a common BRICS currency, because by then the economies need to achieve greater integration as well as improve their quality and structure to a certain extent so that they become very similar economies.
