Rappler news site on January 2 quoted Major Euridecy Revillas, Deputy Director of the Ozamiz City Police, as saying that they had arrested a person named April John Permanhil, a festival employee suspected of helping a gang of thieves dig a tunnel into the Gaisano shopping center on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2023.

Major Revillas said police were looking for three suspects seen on CCTV footage on January 1 breaking into the vaults of the GKC and Oro Italia Fine jewelry stores in the Gaisano shopping center.

CCTV also captured the gang trying to open the MetroBank ATM located inside the center.

"The tunnel started from the festival area in the private housing area next to the shopping center," said Major Revillas.

Investigation results showed that from the festival area, the gang of thieves dug through a cement drainage pipe and reached the shopping mall's dining area.

Once inside, the gang blew up the MetroBank ATM and stole 80,000 pesos in cash.

Next, they broke into the vault of the GKC jewelry store and stole more than 1.7 million pesos worth of jewelry and cash. The next target was the Oro Italia Fine jewelry store, where about 40 million pesos worth of goods were stolen.
