Australia's Daniil Medvedev overpowered Jannik Sinner in the first set of the Australian Open final, today, January 28.

Medvedev won the first set
Sinner did not allow Djokovic a break point in the semi-finals, but lost two service games in the first set against Medvedev. At 3-5 down, the Italian served and trailed 15-40. He saved two break points before succumbing to Medvedev's movement and ball handling. The Russian won two points in a row, taking advantage of the third set point to win 6-3.

Medvedev still leads
Medvedev's good serving ability helped him maintain his serve game. Sinner was behind in the game, but still persistently chased and shortened the score to 3-4.

Both players held their closest serve games. Sinner closed the gap, but Medvedev still held the advantage, leading 3-2 and holding serve.
Medvedev won the game with the ball
Medvedev's persistence made Sinner lose patience and continued to miss. The Italian was down 0-40 and could only save one break point, before Medvedev hit a powerful counterattack to take the second chance and lead 2-1.

1-1 set one
Sinner held the first service game quite easily. Medvedev then led 40-15 on serve and then lost 40-40, before winning two points to level the score at 1-1.

The Australian Open is sure to welcome a new men's singles champion, as Jannik Sinner takes on Daniil Medvedev in today's final.

Australia's Daniil Medvedev won in five sets for the second time at this year's Australian Open, defeating Alexander Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 in the semi-finals on January 26.

Medvedev is the 13th male player in Open Era history to reach the Australian Open final three or more times. He lost to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022. In this year's final, Medvedev will meet Jannik Sinner, who beat Djokovic in the first semi-final. Having to play three five-set matches from the start of the tournament could put Medvedev at a physical disadvantage against his in-form Italian opponent. The Russian played 20 hours and 33 minutes of six matches in the tournament, while Sinner played only 14 hours and 44 minutes.

Sinner has only dropped one set en route to this year's Australian Open final. He has been the ATP's best player in recent months, with 19 wins in 20 matches since October 2023. If he beats Medvedev in the final on the afternoon of January 28, Sinner will climb to a career-best ranking of world number three.

The two finalists had in common that they had not played any warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open. Medvedev had not practiced as much as Sinner before leaving for Melbourne. The Russian's ball-feeling improved with each match, especially after his comeback against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, the five-set match against Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals and the comeback win over Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.

Sinner lost to Medvedev in all six of their first encounters, but narrowed the gap in the head-to-head score with two consecutive wins in the ATP 500 finals in Beijing and Vienna in October 2023. The Italian then continued to beat Medvedev in the semi-finals of the 2023 ATP Finals. In those matches, Medvedev's deep return style was ineffective against his junior's heavy and accurate shots.

Sinner's previous major title was at the Masters 1000 event in Toronto in August 2023. After a terrific performance at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the 22-year-old is confident of reaching his first Grand Slam. But Medvedev's experience and habit of coming back from behind may prevent Sinner from achieving glory in Melbourne.
