Ensure to keep the original value

Mr. Le Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Tri province, said: “The biggest goal of the Thong Nhat Park project at the Hien Luong - Ben Hai National Historical Site is to restore and embellish while still ensuring the preservation of the original values that make up the site. This is both a responsibility for preservation and a tribute to the past.”

To implement this project, since the end of August 2025, the Hien Luong - Ben Hai National Special Monument Site has temporarily stopped receiving visitors to hand over the site to the construction unit. The project has carried out the overall renovation and repair of many items, in which the demolition and restoration of Hien Luong Bridge has received the attention of the people.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vung, Commander of the construction contractor, said: A council has been established to comprehensively assess the current state of Hien Luong Bridge's components. The restoration process will repair the steel structure, restore the bridge deck with ironwood planks, repaint the Hien Luong Bridge in two colors of blue and yellow according to its historical state, reinforce the bridge abutments and install new technical equipment. All are carried out on the principle of preserving the original elements, faithfully reproducing historical values.

Mr. Tran Phong, Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee said: "Implementing the Thong Nhat Park Project at the Hien Luong - Ben Hai National Historical Relic Site has profound humanistic significance and has received the attention of the Government, ministries and the unanimous support of the people. This is not only a project to preserve relics but also opens up opportunities for sustainable tourism development, making Quang Tri an attractive destination on the national and international peace tourism map."

Usable wooden bars and steel components will be reassembled to ensure originality.

Currently, the entire bridge deck has been dismantled. The remaining wooden bars and steel structures will be re-installed to ensure their originality. After restoration, the Hien Luong bridge deck will have 894 50mm thick ironwood planks, treated with specialized paint to increase durability, of which 444 are in the South and 450 are in the North.

Hien Luong Bridge was built by the French in 1952. After the Geneva Agreement of 1954, this bridge became the temporary military demarcation line dividing the North and South at the 17th parallel. In 1967, the bridge was destroyed by American bombs and was restored after the country's reunification. In 2014, Hien Luong Bridge was repainted in two colors: blue and yellow on the steel frame, recalling the memories of a time when the country was still divided.

Preserving relics, developing tourism

Along with Hien Luong Bridge, many other important items in the relic site are also being renovated simultaneously. At the flagpole, the railings are replaced with stone-clad concrete railings, and wooden doors are replaced with high-quality aluminum doors. At the same time, the entrance for the disabled is renovated, the flag-raising system is upgraded, more trees are planted, and the basement is converted into a documentary screening room for visitors.
