The FIFA Council has decided to choose Indonesia as the host of the 2023 U17 World Cup instead of Peru. The tournament is scheduled to take place in November with the participation of 24 teams. The Indonesian U17 team did not qualify for the Asian tournament but still qualified for the U17 World Cup as the host.
"I can only express my gratitude for the FIFA Council's decision to choose Indonesia to host the U17 World Cup this year. This is the world football federation's way of showing its trust in Indonesian football," said Indonesian Football Federation President Erick Thohir.
The original host of the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup was Peru. The South American country retained the right to host after the 2021 tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
U17 Indonesia attended the U17 World Cup as host.
However, this time Peru still cannot host the U17 World Cup. FIFA assessed that Peru did not have time to complete the infrastructure preparation to serve the U17 World Cup and decided to cancel the country's hosting qualification for the tournament in April 2023.
Indonesia was awarded the right to host the U17 World Cup half a year before the opening date. However, the archipelago country has been fully prepared to host the U20 World Cup and can take advantage of it to organize the tournament at the U17 level.
FIFA revoked Indonesia's hosting rights for the 2023 U20 World Cup at the end of March. FIFA's announcement did not mention the reason for Indonesia's revocation. This decision may be related to FIFA's cancellation of the U20 World Cup draw a few days ago. At that time, the host refused to allow representatives of Israel's U20 team - one of the teams participating in the tournament - to enter the country. This problem will not be repeated at the U17 World Cup, because Israel has no representative participating in the tournament.
The problem for Indonesia is that Gelora Bung Karno Stadium is scheduled to host a music event during the U17 World Cup. The Indonesian Football Federation had to work with the organizers of the Cold Play concert to be able to use Bung Karno Stadium.
