Ukraine threatens 'dire consequences' in relations with Iran, UNSC holds urgent meeting on conflict situation

Ukraine said on September 10 that it could cut ties with Iran if Russia used ballistic missiles supplied by Tehran to attack the Eastern European country.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Russia had received missiles from Iran and that Moscow expected to use the weapons in the coming weeks. However, Iran denied the allegations.

According to Reuters news agency, on September 10, when asked whether Kiev could cut ties with Tehran if the information about the missile supply was confirmed, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhyi gave a strong warning.

Accordingly, Mr. Tykhyi emphasized: "I will not say exactly what dire consequences mean, so as not to weaken our diplomatic stance. But I can say that all options, including the one you mentioned, are on the table."

Ukraine's allies, including the United States, say the arms transfer amounts to a significant escalation and they will impose further sanctions on Iran.

Previously, on September 9, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian Charge d'Affaires Shahriar Amouzegar to protest information that Tehran could provide ballistic missiles to Moscow.

Ukraine downgraded diplomatic relations with Iran in 2022 after Tehran supplied Moscow with Shahed attack drones, which the Russian military has used for long-range airstrikes.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, on the same day, September 10, at its headquarters in New York, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting to discuss missile and drone attacks in Ukraine in recent days.

At the meeting, UN Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya called on world leaders attending the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly to "seize every opportunity" to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The emergency meeting of the Security Council came after council members Ecuador and France supported Ukraine's request.
