In mid-October, the Yen Tri grapefruit area began its autumn season. In many gardens, early ripe grapefruits were harvested and sold to traders at an average price of about 14,000 VND/fruit, bringing in a significant early-season income.
Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh - Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative checks technical steps to ensure grapefruit quality before export.
Although Dien grapefruit ripens later, around mid-November, since the end of October, the working atmosphere in Dien grapefruit gardens has been bustling. People are focusing on the final technical stages, preparing for the first export shipments of the 2025 grapefruit crop. Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh, Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative, Yen Tri, said: This year, the cooperative plans to export about 100 tons of Dien grapefruit to two traditional markets, the EU and the US; it can expand to the Korean market. In about a month, when Dien grapefruit begins to ripen, the cooperative will prepare for export shipments, but from now on, we grapefruit growers must always stick to the garden and closely monitor each grapefruit tree. After the recent storm, taking care of and ensuring the quality and appearance of the fruit must be given more attention.
Dien grapefruit products are pre-processed and labeled with traceability labels according to standards before export.
This is the fourth year that Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative has exported grapefruit to international markets. Although the export volume is not large, the fact that for three consecutive years, the exported grapefruit batches have been accepted in demanding markets is of special importance. Not only does it affirm the Dien Yen Thuy grapefruit brand, but it also contributes to stimulating domestic consumption, stabilizing prices and increasing the economic value of grapefruit trees. Successful exports also help change the production mindset of grapefruit growers towards professionalism, methodical, focusing on quality, safety standards and traceability.
It is known that Dien grapefruit trees began to take root in Dai Dong, Yen Tri nearly 30 years ago. At that time, Dai Dong village was mainly people from the lowlands who came to reclaim land to make a living. With their industrious and hard-working nature, the people here tried to plant many types of crops with the hope of finding varieties suitable for the soil and climate. In 1996, the first Dien grapefruit trees were brought from Hanoi for trial planting. Unexpectedly, the specialty of Dien land was suitable and grew strongly in Dai Dong land. Thanks to the suitable soil and climate and being cared for according to the correct technical process, Dien grapefruit quickly affirmed its brand. The grapefruit has a golden color, plump segments, sweet taste, and characteristic aroma, and is favored by consumers. At one point, the price of each grapefruit was up to 34,000 VND, a very high price compared to the general level at that time, helping many households have a stable income and become well-off.
From the initial pioneer households, the area of Dien grapefruit has been rapidly expanded. The entire Yen Tri commune currently has about 500 hectares of Dien grapefruit, red grapefruit, green-skin grapefruit of all kinds. Of which, Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative has 30 core members with a production area of 30 hectares, producing grapefruit according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, with an average output of 750 tons/year. Currently, the entire grapefruit area of the commune has been granted a growing area code, opening up great opportunities for export.
Among the households getting rich from Dien grapefruit trees, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue is a typical example. Realizing that Dai Dong soil is suitable for Dien grapefruit trees, in 2016, her family boldly invested in 7 hectares of Dien grapefruit and green-skin grapefruit. Three years later, the grapefruit garden yielded its first harvest. Ms. Hue said: We apply safe production processes according to VietGAP standards, apply organic fertilizers and invest in automatic drip irrigation systems, and prune branches and canopies properly. Thanks to that, the trees are healthy, the fruits are even, the grapefruit segments are crispy and sweet. Currently, the stable selling price of grapefruit fluctuates from 12,000 - 15,000 VND/fruit, bringing the family a revenue of over 1 billion VND per year.
By applying science and technology, not using pesticides or chemical fertilizers, many households in Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative have shifted to organic farming, producing according to sustainable value chains. Thanks to that, the average income reaches 300 - 400 million VND/ha/year, the total revenue of the Cooperative reaches over 7 billion VND annually. Dien grapefruit is also one of the typical agricultural production models and has become a key crop bringing high economic efficiency to Yen Tri.
Mr. Vu Xuan Oanh, Director of Dai Dong Agricultural Cooperative, said: To maintain the brand and improve product quality, members of the Cooperative are committed to producing according to the correct quality process. All households keep daily production logs, use organic fertilizers, and use anti-dandruff fruit bags to ensure appearance and quality. In particular, all households now apply modern irrigation technology to care for plants, and periodically test sugar levels to ensure standards before harvesting.
It can be seen that, from the initial experimental steps, up to now, Dien Yen Thuy grapefruit has gradually affirmed its position in the domestic and foreign markets. Each harvest season not only brings a stable source of income to Yen Tri people but also proves the right direction in converting crop structure, applying science and technology and safe agricultural production. With the existing foundation, Dien Yen Thuy grapefruit is continuing to expand its export market, becoming a key agricultural product, contributing to the sustainable economic development of Yen Tri commune.
