Farewell to musician Lu Nhat Vu - author of "Song of the Southern Land"

(Dan Tri) - The passing of musician Lu Nhat Vu, author of immortal songs such as: "Southern Land Song", "Saigon Girl Carrying Ammunition"... left deep sorrow in the hearts of colleagues and music lovers.


Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, a source close to musician Lu Nhat Vu's family confirmed that he passed away at 9:30 a.m. on March 29 due to a serious illness, at the age of 89.

Musician Lu Nhat Vu was the life partner of poet Le Giang, both of whom made many contributions to Vietnamese art. His passing left a deep sorrow in the hearts of Vietnamese artists and music lovers.

Musician Tran The Bao expressed: "Deeply mourning the talented musician, author of "The Saigon Girl Who Carries Ammunition", "The Song of the Southern Land" and many research works and anthologies of Southern folk songs. My condolences to poet Le Giang and his family, and I hope musician Lu Nhat Vu rests in peace."

Singer Quoc Dai emotionally shared: "Another great loss! Sincere condolences."

Xam singing artist Nguyen Quang Long wrote: "He left behind a huge body of research on Southern folk music , especially folk songs. Many popular folk songs today are thanks to his collection."

Musician Lu Nhat Vu, real name Le Van Gat, was born in 1936 in Phu Cuong, Thu Dau Mot City, Binh Duong . He was awarded the 45-year Party membership badge in March 2024.

During his career, he was Deputy Secretary General of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, term 11 (1981), Secretary of the Vietnam Musicians Association, term 3 (1983), and Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture and Arts in Ho Chi Minh City.

He graduated from the Composition Department of the Vietnam Music School (now the Hanoi Conservatory of Music) in 1962, worked at the Southern Song and Dance Troupe and the Liberation Arts Agency, then worked at the Institute of Music Research until his retirement in 1997.

He composed many famous songs such as: The Saigon girl carrying ammunition, By the Uncle Ho monument, Please rest assured, Mom, Song of the Southern Land, Afternoon on the Meo village, The goods you brought to the trenches, The sound of the gong crossing the waterfall, Hon Khoai...

In particular, he left his mark with a series of research works on Southern folk songs, collaborating with Le Giang, Nguyen Dong Nai, Thach An, Nguyen Van Hoa, Quach Vu...

Typical works include: Studying Southern folk songs (1983), Vietnamese folk songs in the South (1986), Lu Nhat Vu's song collection (1995), Music and Life (1989), 300 Southern melodies (2002), Ho in Vietnamese folk songs (2004), Vietnamese lullabies (2005), Ly in Vietnamese folk songs (2006), Speaking poetry - Speaking verse - Southern falling poetry (2010), Liberation march (2011)...

He received many prestigious awards such as the State Prize for Literature and Arts (2001), First Class Anti-American Medal, Second Class Victory Medal, and First Class Labor Medal.

He was also recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records Center as "Musician with many works collecting and researching Vietnamese folk songs".

The musician's coffin will lie in state at the Southern National Funeral Home (Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City). The funeral will take place at 7 p.m. on March 29 and the funeral will take place at 6 a.m. on April 1. After that, his coffin will be buried at Binh Duong Flower Garden Cemetery (Binh Duong).
