Honoring two Vietnamese cities as inspirations for a greener, more sustainable ASEAN

Hoa Lu and Hai Phong cities were honored at the 6th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City (ESC) Awards and the 5th Certificate of Recognition (COR) Ceremony held in Langkawi, Kedah state, Malaysia.

The event, within the framework of the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment (AMME-18), from September 2-4, affirmed Vietnam's persistent efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development.

Hoa Lu City is one of 10 outstanding cities to receive the 6th ESC Award. This is a recognition of the city's outstanding initiatives in the fields of sustainable tourism development, environmental education and raising awareness in schools. The ESC Award honors cities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to maintaining a green, clean and livable living environment.

Also at the ceremony, Hai Phong city was awarded the 5th COR Certificate in the category of “Urban biodiversity and green space”. This award recognizes Hai Phong’s efforts in biodiversity conservation and development of urban green spaces.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Johari Abdul Ghani, Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability of Malaysia, affirmed that these achievements are the pride of the nation and “an inspiration for all of us, as we work together to realize our shared vision of a greener, more sustainable ASEAN.”

Mr. Johari also congratulated Vietnam on having three national parks recognized as ASEAN Heritage Parks during these events, including Pu Mat National Park (Nghe An), Dong Nai Cultural and Nature Reserve and Xuan Thuy National Park (Ninh Binh).

According to the Malaysian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, these awards are a testament to the cities’ strong commitment to the environment in the context of rapid urbanization, and reinforce ASEAN’s collective resolve to share best practices and collaborate towards a greener future.
