Farmers harvest summer-autumn rice
Low profit
Having just sold nearly 11 tons of Summer-Autumn rice, Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi, residing in Xom Ruong hamlet, Hao Duoc commune, Tay Ninh province, said that this crop his family cultivated nearly 4 hectares of rice, of which only about 1.7 hectares of OM 5451 rice were harvested, the price of fresh rice sold at the field to traders was 5,600 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Nghi, compared to the same period last year, this year's weather conditions are unfavorable, as from the beginning of the season there were many consecutive heavy rains, high humidity, so diseases increased a lot during the flowering stage, affecting productivity. In addition, rice prices also decreased by about 800 - 1,000 VND/kg, so post-harvest profits were not as expected.
Rice prices are not high while agricultural material prices are increasing, making farmers' profits less and less.
While harvesting more than 1 hectare of OM 5451 rice in Voi hamlet, Ben Cau commune, Tay Ninh province, farmer Nguyen Van Binh said that before harvesting, traders came to the field to check the rice and set the price at 5,800 VND/kg; with about 12 bags of rice per hectare, he estimated the rice yield this crop to be about 6.5 tons/ha.
Fertilizer prices continue to rise
Compared to the beginning of 2025, the current prices of many types of inorganic fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) have increased from several tens of thousands of VND to several hundreds of thousands of VND per bag of fertilizer, 50 kg/bag. The sharpest price increases are for some types of DAP and nitrogen fertilizers (urea), while NPK, potassium and phosphorus fertilizers have increased less.
According to Mr. Binh, the selling price of rice this crop is the same as the last winter-spring crop, while the yield is lower and the investment cost has increased because the price of fertilizers and pesticides is about 15% higher than the last crop, so the profit farmers earn after 3 months of cultivation is not high.
According to many households harvesting early Summer-Autumn rice in Phuoc Chi, Ben Cau, Ninh Dien and Hao Duoc communes (Tay Ninh province), this crop often has higher investment costs than the Winter-Spring crop because the soil is no longer rich in nutrients, and there are many types of pests and diseases remaining from the previous crop. Therefore, in order for the rice to grow well and achieve high yields, farmers must increase the amount of fertilizer and proactively use pesticides to limit pests and diseases.
Farmers in Ben Cau commune are busy harvesting rice.
“The total investment cost for one hectare of rice this crop is about 28 million VND/ha, including land preparation, field cleaning, pumping, rice seeds, agricultural materials, hiring labor to replant rice, harvesting, etc. All costs have increased, especially fertilizer prices, while productivity has decreased, and the selling price is 2,000 - 2,500 VND/kg lower than the same period last year, so even a small profit after harvest is a good thing,” a farmer in Ben Cau commune added.
According to some agricultural material dealers in Thanh Dien, Ninh Dien, Ben Cau communes, the price of nitrogen fertilizers (urea) such as Phu My Fertilizer, Ca Mau Fertilizer, etc. is at 600,000 - 650,000 VND/bag. This price is about 70,000 - 100,000 VND/bag higher, depending on the type, compared to the same period last year.
Many other types of DAP fertilizer are also sold at quite high prices. Korean DAP prices range from 1,200,000 - 1,300,000 VND/bag; Chinese DAP with yellow grains, Russian DAP with black and green grains range from 960,000 - 1,100,000 VND/bag.
The price of NPK 20-20-15 Ba Con Co and Binh Dien is at 1,000,000 - 1,100,000 VND/bag. The price of Potassium (Russia, Belarus, Israel) is at 460,000 - 580,000 VND/bag. Phosphate fertilizer (Long Thanh) is 250,000 - 260,000 VND/bag, phosphate (Van Dien) is at 300,000 - 320,000 VND/bag,...
In order for agricultural materials to reach farmers, they must go through many intermediaries, leading to higher selling prices compared to prices at manufacturing plants and import centers. The increase in fertilizer prices has led to an increase in the cost of producing rice and many other crops, causing farmers' profits to decrease, while recently, many agricultural products have not been able to maintain high prices like the same period last year./.
