On average, each year the mangosteen garden brings Mr. Son's family about 150 million VND.

Even at the age of 75, Mr. Son still diligently takes care of each mangosteen tree - a tree that has been with his family for more than twenty years. Mr. Son shared: "My family lives on 7 hectares of mangosteen, so we have to try to take good care of it to get sweet fruit."

Previously, Mr. Son's family life was very difficult. He grew rice but every year the harvest was bad, he worked hard but the income was not much. Struggling to find a new direction, he decided to convert all the rice fields to grow fruit trees and chose mangosteen as the main crop. This decision was considered reckless by many people in the neighborhood, because mangosteen trees take many years to bear fruit, while the family's economy was tight at that time. But with a strong will, he believed that only by changing the way of doing things could he hope to escape poverty.

“At first I was very worried, but I thought if I didn’t try I would never get better, because my situation at that time meant having to worry about tomorrow. From then on I was determined to do it in the hope that life would be better,” Mr. Son shared.

At first, he had no experience, so the process of growing mangosteen trees encountered many difficulties such as pests, poor quality fruit, and low productivity. Despite continuous failures, with a hard-working spirit, he learned from the experiences of previous gardeners and applied new techniques that he learned through newspapers, the Internet, seminars, and training sessions organized by the agricultural sector and local authorities to apply to his garden. He meticulously performed each step such as soil improvement, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, etc. Thanks to that, through each crop, the mangosteen garden became greener and more fruitful.

After many years of hard work, Mr. Son's mangosteen garden has now brought worthy results for his family. In each harvest season, the garden yields high yields, and traders come to the garden to buy all the output at prices ranging from 25,000-45,000 VND/kg depending on the time, so on average, he earns about 150 million VND per year after deducting expenses. With this source of income, Mr. Son has gradually had a comfortable life from the garden economy.

During the cultivation process, Mr. Son learned that in order for mangosteen trees to produce good and abundant fruit, after each harvest, they must be fertilized with the right amount and mud must be added to the tree. They must prune the branches to create an open canopy; they must remove bad fruit to help the remaining fruit grow big and round to sell at a higher price. In addition, priority must be given to organic fertilizer to help the tree grow well and develop more sustainably.

Mr. Son confided: “Having the life I have today is thanks to my will to rise up and not be afraid of failure. I always encourage my children and grandchildren to be diligent, alert, and constantly update new techniques in farming. Only then can we bring high economic efficiency and get rich in our own garden.” To increase income, Mr. Son also plans to research trees that produce fruit out of season to sell for a higher price.

Ms. Bui Thi Banh, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Xang Moi A Hamlet, said: “Despite his old age, Mr. Son always upholds the spirit of overcoming difficulties, always approaching new things and constantly striving to improve in life. He is not only good at economics, but also encourages the people in the hamlet to work enthusiastically, develop the economy, and build his homeland to become more and more prosperous.”
