US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee that the US had moved “some tanks to the battlefield” so it could begin training Ukrainian soldiers.

A US official said 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks needed for the training arrived at a port in Bremerhaven, Germany, late last week and they will arrive at the base early next week.
The transfer thus comes weeks ahead of the schedule outlined when military leaders from across Europe and elsewhere met in Germany last month to discuss Ukraine’s needs in the conflict with Russia.
Tank training will be the latest and most dangerous form of combat instruction the US is providing to the Ukrainian military. Over the past several months, the US military has trained more than 8,800 Ukrainian soldiers, including on the use of Stryker and Bradley fighting vehicles as well as M109 Paladins.
Bradleys and Strykers are armored and armed vehicles used to transport troops, while the Paladin is a self-propelled artillery piece.
During a hearing on Thursday, Senator Susan Collins urged Mr. Austin to quickly transport and get tanks to the Ukrainian military and into the battlefield.
