Vietnam's shrimp industry is holding up in a volatile global economic landscape.

Vietnam's shrimp industry is still growing impressively, aiming for a turnover of 3.8 billion USD by 2025 thanks to a green development strategy, focusing on investment in high technology and international cooperation.

Overcoming the barrier of export tax increase of more than 20%

Vietnam's shrimp industry is holding its ground in the volatile global economic context. As the "champion" in the seafood export group, shrimp not only brings in abundant foreign currency but also affirms Vietnam's position on the global supply chain map. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in September 2025 alone, shrimp exports reached 410 million USD, pushing the total turnover in the first 9 months of the year to 3.38 billion USD, up 20.3% over the same period last year. It is expected that in 2025, this figure could reach 3.6-3.8 billion USD, a clear demonstration of stable growth despite fierce trade barriers.

The US market, despite applying three types of taxes simultaneously: reciprocal, anti-dumping and anti-subsidy, is still an important destination, accounting for 28% of the shrimp import market share from Vietnam in the past 8 months. VASEP Deputy Secretary General To Thi Tuong Lan emphasized that Vietnam is emerging as the world 's center for processing value-added goods. Ms. Lan shared: "Many products that competitors like India or Ecuador cannot produce, American supermarket chains still have to come to Vietnam." This is not only thanks to the quality of products that meet international standards but also due to the long-standing reputation, helping Vietnamese shrimp overcome fierce competition and maintain a solid position.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , whiteleg shrimp output in the first 9 months of 2025 reached 719,700 tons, up 7.1%, while black tiger shrimp output reached 212,300 tons, up 3.5%.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, whiteleg shrimp output in the first nine months of 2025 reached 719,700 tons, up 7.1%, while black tiger shrimp reached 212,300 tons, up 3.5%. This growth comes from a strong shift to industrial farming models, super-intensive farming and high-tech application, helping to control the environment, increase productivity, reduce diseases and save costs.

Key areas in the Mekong Delta are recovering significantly, with raw shrimp prices at high levels, especially large sizes for export. Director of the 3K Center under the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control Vu Tuan Cuong commented: "Shrimp export prices increased by about 20% compared to the same period in 2024, helping farmers earn good profits. With abundant supply and recovering demand, the Vietnamese shrimp industry has many positive prospects in the last months of the year."

However, behind the impressive figures are significant challenges. Climate change increases the risk of disease and weather fluctuations, production costs escalate due to rising feed and breeding prices, along with technical barriers from import markets. Mr. Cuong frankly pointed out that these are "real tests" that force the industry to transform, invest more systematically in technological innovation and sustainability certification. If not resolved promptly, growth momentum may slow down, especially when competitors such as India and Ecuador are promoting production at lower costs.

Focus on sustainable green strategy

To overcome the challenges and move towards the target of 3.8 billion USD, the Vietnamese shrimp industry is focusing on green development strategy, considering it the key to sustainable growth. In the context of global consumption increasingly prioritizing environmentally friendly products, the transition to green farming and circular economy not only reduces costs but also improves competitiveness. Experts emphasize the need to strictly control the quality of seeds, feed, water sources and waste treatment, to minimize environmental impact and meet strict international standards.

Highlights of Vietnam Shrimp Export 2025

Key Indicators Strong growth
Export Turnover First 9 months: 3.38 billion USD (up 20.3% over the same period). Expected for the whole year: 3.6-3.8 billion USD.
Shrimp Production Whiteleg shrimp: 719,700 tons (up 7.1%). Tiger shrimp: 212,300 tons (up 3.5%).
Main Market The US accounts for 28% of the market share, focusing on value-added products. Export prices increase by 20% compared to 2024.

An important step forward is the Aquaculture Vietnam and VietShrimp Asia 2026 event, held for the first time in March 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City, bringing together more than 30 countries and territories, along with hundreds of businesses, experts and policymakers. Mr. Vu Tuan Cuong said that despite many fluctuations in 2025, the seafood industry still maintained a stable growth momentum, with a total output of about 7.2 million tons by September, an export turnover of 8.1 billion USD, and expected to reach 9.2 billion USD for the whole year.

"Technology is the key to helping Vietnamese seafood increase productivity while ensuring international standards of safety and sustainability," Mr. Cuong emphasized. This event is not only a place to display products but also a launching pad for digital transformation, with AI, IoT, automation, traceability and green logistics solutions being demonstrated live, helping Vietnamese businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, access appropriate technology, reduce costs and improve efficiency.

The series of international seminars within the framework of the exhibition will discuss in depth the circular economy, sustainable development, green consumption trends and digital transformation in the global supply chain. This is in line with the Government's green growth strategy, where the shrimp industry is identified as an important pillar of a sustainable agricultural economy. The application of technology and expansion of international cooperation will help Vietnam shift from "processing" to "value creation", thereby elevating the Vietnamese shrimp brand in the world market.

Experts predict that if the exhibition takes full advantage of its opportunities, along with the current growth momentum, the Vietnamese seafood industry can achieve its export target of 12 billion USD in the next few years. Furthermore, according to the National Action Plan for Shrimp Industry Development to 2025 (Decision 79/QD-TTg), the target output is 1.3-1.4 million tons and export turnover is 4-4.3 billion USD, emphasizing green and clean development. This not only strengthens the position but also contributes to the country's green vision on the international seafood export map.
