100% of hospitals in Can Tho City will connect electronic medical records

With the goal of all hospitals having to publish electronic medical records by September 30, the seemingly "impossible" electronic medical record connection in Can Tho City is now nearing its finish line.

The workshop "Hospital quality management on patient safety and digital transformation" took place on September 24 in Can Tho city.

At the workshop, Mr. Hoang Quoc Cuong - Director of Can Tho City Department of Health - said that after merging three localities (Can Tho City, Soc Trang and Hau Giang), the new Can Tho City Department of Health has "raced" to assess the current situation and re-organize the entire quality management system of all affiliated hospitals.

In particular, the connection of electronic medical records across all hospitals, which was thought to be "impossible", is now nearing completion.

Since the beginning of September, Can Tho City has had 22/58 hospitals announce the implementation of electronic medical records, and it is expected that by September 30, 100% of medical units with beds will have implemented electronic medical records.

According to Mr. Cuong, in recent times, the health sector of Can Tho City has made efforts to deploy solutions on quality management, patient safety and initially applied digital transformation.

To build a smart hospital model, the health sector synchronously deploys solutions: digital technology infrastructure; comprehensive digitalization of hospital data, quality management and data-based decision making; digital patient experience; application of digital technology in expertise and technology...

Since the beginning of 2025, the Can Tho Health Sector Hospital Quality Management Council has had an action plan aimed at applying information technology in checking and evaluating hospital quality.

Specifically, the Google Appsheet application is included in the scoring criteria and 43 sub-items according to the Hospital Quality Standards. This is the premise for improving and evaluating hospital quality using smartphones and gradually eliminating the use of paper, helping leaders of the Department of Health and hospital leaders to monitor, correct, and promptly improve issues on the Data Dashboard.

Discussing at the workshop, hospital representatives all said that the vital issue to help improve hospital quality and attract patients today is "patient safety and digital transformation".

Hospital and medical facility leaders are aware of this and are overcoming difficulties starting with changing the awareness of medical staff, improving data platforms, weak infrastructure, etc. to reduce procedures and create convenience for people to access quality and safer medical services.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Ha Anh Duc - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management under the Ministry of Health - emphasized that Can Tho City is one of the localities that has well implemented "Hospital quality management on patient safety and digital transformation".

Among them, there are a number of private hospitals that have achieved both quality management and patient safety standards according to the US JCI standards.

"In the coming time, the Ministry of Health will organize training, supervision and certification for qualified medical units. In particular, the Ministry recommends that qualified units will be linked to service prices, in order to motivate units to strive to achieve the standards in this set of criteria.

"Standard units will be periodically evaluated by the management agency. If they fail to meet the standards, they will be demoted," said Mr. Duc.
