On the morning of October 2, from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) - where the 17th TWAS Conference took place (from September 29 to October 2), Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, former Deputy Director of the 108 Military Central Hospital, said that he and Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, had officially become academicians of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
Both were awarded certificates of recognition by the President of TWAS, Prof. Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, in the presence of more than 300 international scientists.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Nguyen The Hoang expressed his pride at being recognized in the world scientific community, and affirmed that it is his responsibility to continue researching, teaching and inspiring the younger generation. He hopes to take advantage of the TWAS network to expand international cooperation, joining hands to solve global challenges such as climate change, public health and sustainable development.
In a letter to Mr. Hoang, the President of TWAS announced the decision to elect him as an official academician from January 1, 2025. In this election, TWAS admitted 74 new academicians - the largest number in history. Brazil and China had the most new academicians (10 people), Vietnam had 2 representatives.
Professor Nguyen The Hoang, born in 1965 in Ha Tinh, is the main author of more than 100 scientific works, mainly in the fields of microsurgery, organ transplantation and treatment of limb deformities. He has received many domestic and international awards, including the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award from the Humboldt Foundation (Germany) in 2012.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974 in Quang Ngai, specializing in researching medicinal herbs and discovering new drugs. She has more than 80 international articles, received the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award 2019 and the Kovalevskaia Award 2021 for outstanding female scientists.
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), sponsored by UNESCO and founded in 1983, currently brings together more than 1,400 leading scientists from around the world from more than 100 countries.
