Causes of malnutrition

Traditional Tet is an occasion for family reunions, meeting friends and thousands of other social interactions.

Tet is also a story about money in the true sense. If you are rich, you can have apricot blossoms and kumquat trees, if you are poor, you can have marigolds and gladiolus. During Tet, people mainly visit each other and wish each other a happy new year, so no one wants their house to look simple and sloppy.

As a result, at the end of the year, everything is so busy that it seems like we are running away from the enemy, sometimes until the last minute of the New Year. Therefore, Tet sometimes becomes a burden for each family.

Actually, there is something more basic that people do not realize, but can make Tet less fun, adding to the burden of Tet. That is, we eat too much on Tet - eat a lot without ensuring nutrition.

The New Year is a time to clean up the mess of the old year, but Tet brings many other messes. Daily routines are disrupted, you may stay up late and wake up later than usual, meals overlap and it is often convenient to visit during Tet, so mealtimes are very irregular.

Remember to drink water occasionally due to frequent travel schedules and cold, dry weather during Tet holiday, which can easily make you dehydrated. Dehydration and sluggish eating during Tet holiday will lead to constipation after Tet holiday, and no one wants to be sluggish and have too many toxins during Tet holiday.

Continuous consumption of cakes, jams, and melon seeds makes you lose your appetite for main meals. The body is constantly loaded with carbohydrates, making you feel lethargic, unbalanced, and sometimes even have unexplained low blood sugar.

The busy end-of-year meals, similar dishes, and excess meat and fish make the body heavy and sluggish because the digestive system works continuously all day.

Tet is usually the time when all business activities stop. People form the habit of stocking up on food for the Tet holidays to ensure that their families are always full and warm.

To keep food for a long time, there must be a way to preserve it, which is why we have created special and interesting dishes such as jam, pickles, salted meat, banh tet, beef sausage, and braised pork. These are dishes that can be used for a long time thanks to the sugar and salt used to inhibit bacteria in the food.

However, eating too much and continuously during Tet is the biggest cause of a double situation: loss of appetite but weight gain, severe micronutrient deficiency. The pressure of going back to work after Tet when the body is depleted of nutrients, and the spirit is lethargic is an alarming reality for many people.

Therefore, limit the types of cakes and jams on Tet holiday. In the tray of guests, add some more nutritious foods such as nuts: pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, dried fruits such as grapes, jackfruit, low-sugar jams such as grapefruit peel... to make the Tet tray more balanced, helping the host and guests have more choices.

How to choose balanced foods

Consuming processed foods on a daily basis during the holidays can cause serious nutritional imbalances. Therefore, try to save one fresh meal each day, perhaps in the evening, when all the activities of the day are over.

A nutritious meal includes fresh meat and fish (can be frozen), colorful green vegetables, and some tubers such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, and pumpkins for Tet. Vegetables harvested in the spring, especially cruciferous vegetables, are very nutritious foods because they have a long growing period and are less prone to pests and diseases than in the summer.

We have a tradition of eating banh chung and pickled onions - which is also a good habit. Pickled onions or pickled onions is a method of fermenting vegetables such as carrots, onions, pickled onions... similar to pickled cabbage, which is very good for the digestive system. Pickled onions can provide beneficial bacteria, rebalancing factors that destroy the balance of the intestines such as alcohol, beer, cakes and jams.

Banh chung and banh tet have a lot of sticky rice, high glycemic index, and can easily make you feel heavy in the stomach, so eating them with pickled vegetables is very reasonable, making them easier to digest. That's why there is a saying: "Fatty meat, pickled onions, red parallel sentences/ High pole, firecrackers, green banh chung".

To reduce the burden on the digestive system, you can practice intermittent fasting on alternate holidays. Try to finish the previous night's dinner early before bedtime, then push the next morning's breakfast closer to noon, to extend the fasting period from the previous night. At this time, instead of eating three main meals, you may only have two main meals and other snacks and snacks left during the holiday.

This active and planned fasting will create momentum for the body to rest, increase metabolism, and burn excess fat in the body. You can use additional coconut oil and sesame oil to support more energy during the day.

Let's have a light, full but new Tet holiday, instead of repeating the same old situations of many years, okay? Paying more attention to what we eat during Tet will help us have a happy and energetic Tet holiday!
