Android 15 can find lost phones even when they're turned off

According to TechRadar , the Google I/O 2024 conference has been set for May 14. This event will introduce many new features of the Android 15 operating system, the most notable of which is the ability to search for devices when offline. Similar to the iPhone, this ability will help locate upcoming Android 15 devices even when they are turned off.

Android 15 is expected to be launched at Google I/O this year

The news that this feature is coming to Android 15 has been rumored since last year and has received constant attention from users. According to Android Police , through analyzing the Android source code, this ability is expected to be available on the Google Pixel 9 and possibly the Google Pixel 8 when updated to Android 15.

However, the offline phone search feature requires hardware support, so devices like the Google Pixel 7 or Google Fold may not be equipped.

The mechanism of this feature is similar to that on iPhone 11 and newer iPhone models. Specifically, even when the device is turned off, the Bluetooth signal will still be emitted. Other devices that support offline search will recognize this signal when nearby and report back to the owner about the location of the lost device.

Google's "Find My Device" network has yet to expand to support offline devices and third-party tracking devices, despite the feature being introduced at Google I/O last May.

Users can currently use “Find My Device” to locate Android and Wear OS devices that are powered on and connected to the network. The update is expected to add support for offline devices, third-party tracking devices, and alerts users if someone is using a tracking device to track their location without permission.

Currently users can only track Android devices if they are online

According to Android Police , the reason the feature has been delayed is because Google is waiting for Apple to finalize the specifications for cross-platform tracking of lost devices, regardless of operating system.

Hopefully, Google will share more details about this feature at its I/O event on May 14. However, users may have to wait a while after launch to experience this feature. Google is expected to launch Android 15 and the Pixel 9 phone line around October 2024, similar to the 2023 schedule.
