The newly launched iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro have quickly become the center of controversy over durability. Although the iPhone Air impresses with its thin, light, hard-to-bend design and good scratch resistance, some images still show that the device can still have scratches.

iPhone 17 Pro no scratches

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro has made many people more worried when the devices displayed at Apple Stores recorded marks on the back, especially around the wireless charging ring.

Responding to 9to5mac , Apple explained that these are not scratches but are caused by the display charging dock being worn, leaving marks on the device. These marks can be easily wiped off.

The company also said it is replacing old charging docks in stores. In addition to the iPhone 17 Pro, some other models such as the iPhone 16 may also experience the same phenomenon.

The back of the iPhone 17 Pro is scratched

Meanwhile, YouTube channel JerryRigEverything posted images showing that the raised edge around the camera cluster of the iPhone 17 Pro is more prone to scratches than other areas because Apple did not bevel or round this part.

iPhone 17 Pro is very difficult to scratch on the body and back?

Apple responded that the camera bezel is made of aluminum, like the one on MacBooks and other products. This material has been tested for durability, but over time it may develop minor scratches due to everyday use.

Tests still show that the iPhone 17 Pro is very difficult to scratch on the body and back, only the camera cluster edge is easily affected. The 2nd generation Ceramic Shield glass on the iPhone 17 series is also rated to be much more scratch-resistant than before.

Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro uses a premium 7000-series aluminum frame that has undergone multiple rounds of durability testing. However, compared to the titanium frame in the previous generation, the switch to aluminum also has some trade-offs, so the company recommends users use a case to protect the device.

According to Apple, the images of scratched iPhones circulating on social media do not accurately reflect reality, as many cases are damage caused by intentional impact. Similarly, models displayed in stores do not accurately represent real durability, because they are subjected to hundreds of tests by customers every day.

The company emphasizes that the new design brings many benefits: lighter weight, better heat dissipation, longer battery life, and a more comfortable grip.
