On the evening of August 22, US time, Ms. Harris gave a speech accepting the official nomination of the Democratic Party, becoming the party's presidential candidate. Previously, the US media called this a historic speech, because it marked the first time in this country that a woman of color and Asian American was nominated by a major political party to run for the White House. The US media commented that Ms. Harris has been vice president for more than three years, but advisers believe that Americans do not know much about her biography. During the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week, her campaign made an effort to introduce her to the public. Her speech is expected to summarize and sketch her portrait: A former prosecutor, a fighter, a person from the middle class. Ms. Harris became the most promising candidate of the Democratic Party more than a month ago after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race to the White House. Her powerful speeches in recent times have received enthusiastic support from voters ahead of the November 5 election. Ms. Harris has raised a record $500 million in a month. She has also narrowed the gap or led Mr. Trump in many polls in the battleground states that will decide the election. In her speech, Ms. Harris thanked US President Joe Biden and his wife, as well as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. She mentioned her parents, immigrants who traveled across the United States to do many different jobs, and the virtues they instilled in her. "My mother is a smart brown woman, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a local accent. As the oldest child, I saw how the world sometimes treated her, but my mother never lost her temper," Vice President Harris said. "She was tough, she was courageous, she was a pioneer in the fight for women's health. She taught us never to complain about injustice, but to do something about it," the Democratic candidate said. Ms. Harris then accepted the Democratic presidential nomination: "So, on behalf of the American people, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother spoke, on behalf of my mother and everyone who has started their own journey that was not always smooth, on behalf of the American people, like the ones I grew up with, who work hard, who pursue their dreams, and who care about each other, on behalf of everyone whose story can only be written in the greatest country on Earth, I accept your nomination for president of the United States." Ms. Harris emphasized that the November election is an opportunity to move America forward. The Democratic candidate has been trying to appeal to independent and moderate voters who could make a difference in battleground states. "Our nation, with this election, has a precious opportunity to move beyond the bitterness, the cynicism, the divisive battles of the past. It's an opportunity to chart a new path forward not as members of any party or faction, but as Americans," the vice president said. "And I want to say, I know there are people with different political views, and I want you to know that I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always count on me to put country before party and before myself, to uphold the fundamental principles of America, from the rule of law, to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power," she pledged. She also criticized her Republican rival Donald Trump, saying he was a threat to the country. "In many ways, Donald Trump is a non-serious person. But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious," she said, recalling the Capitol riot in early 2021 when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after he refused to accept the 2020 election results. She also recalled the legal troubles Trump is facing in his direct attack on his opponent.
