Grandmother mortgaged her red book 8 times to borrow money for her children to go to school

'I have given my land books to my four children seven times for their education. Now that I have a grandchild who passed the university entrance exam, what can I do if I can't take care of him?' - Mrs. Bui Thi Mui, 74 years old, who is the adoptive mother of an orphaned grandchild, loves the education of her granddaughter Dao Thi Minh Hang very much.

Grandmother - Mrs. Tien, calculated and managed every way in poverty

We heard that Hang was admitted to the University of Economics under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, but her circumstances were difficult, the grandmother and her granddaughter lived together, the grandmother was old and sick. We visited and brought the Tuoi Tre readers' scholarship opportunity to Hang.

Through the fields into the countryside of Hang - Phu Ngoi village, Tien Hiep commune, on the outskirts of Phu Ly city, Ha Nam province, a traffic intersection connecting to the North-South expressway is being built. The concrete road is vast but it also means that people no longer have fields to cultivate.

The small house of the grandmother and grandchild had to cross a muddy ditch, a narrow village road covered with green moss and overgrown with trees and leaves. Hang, tall and skinny, was helping her grandmother sweep the garden. Her grandmother had just returned from selling vegetables in the morning, her bicycle still tied to the rear rack with a bunch of rope.

Since hearing the news that her granddaughter got a high score in university, Mrs. Mui has been happier: "She lost her mother but she studies hard and is smart. No matter how difficult it is, I will borrow money for her to go to school."

Hang has just enrolled in the accounting major at the University of Economics, and has to pay 25 million for the first semester tuition and dormitory fees. Hanoi is expensive, and that number is not the final figure.

Mrs. Mui is determined to send her grandchild to school, even though she can't sleep at night because she thinks: "Before, I mortgaged my house's land book 7 times, and borrowed my neighbor's salary book for my 4 children to go to college and university. Now I can still borrow for my grandchild, but I'm more worried because I'm weak, people will hesitate to lend me money." She understands the psychology of the lender, but she tells herself that her "creditworthiness" is still high, so she must try to pay back the loan, so she continues to borrow... successfully for the 8th time for her grandchild to go to school.

She took advantage of the fact that there were some households in the village who had just been compensated for their land and still had some unused money, so she "seized" the opportunity to borrow money and always calculated the money from the fields and business to pay back. If she could not pay on time, she would borrow from her children, grandchildren, and relatives to pay back to keep her reputation.

The student is lucky to have a grandmother who knows how to manage, make up for lost time, always plans for her life and values education. Mrs. Mui affirmed, "Only through education can one have the opportunity to develop."

Lost mother when three years old, always afraid that she will not come back like mother

Mrs. Mui has 4 children, Hang's mother is the third and the only daughter in the family. After graduating from nursing school, she married her college classmate, gave birth to Hang when she was 3 years old and died of abdominal tuberculosis.

Hang was taken in by Mrs. Mui to be cared for. Partly because she loved her daughter too much, partly because Hang was still young, and the young father would not be able to take good care of her. Before she died, her daughter told her to take care of her so she could grow up and study well.

Hang's father had just graduated from university and his salary was not enough to support his young child. After a while, he got married again and rarely contacted Mrs. Mui and Hang's family.

Her daughter passed away and her husband died. Mrs. Mui alone worked more than one hectare of rice field and did many other jobs to raise her studious grandchild.

"I still remember the image of my grandmother taking me to class in 4th grade. When she left, I saw her back gradually getting smaller and smaller, and I was afraid that she would be gone and never come back like my mother" - Hang said sadly.

During the day, she goes to work. Hang stays home to take care of cooking, housework, and watering the plants. The rest of the time she focuses on studying.

Now my grandmother is weak and sick. She has gallstones, a lot of fluid in her lungs, and her knees are always aching. But she still gets up early to pick vegetables to sell at the market, this season sweet potato and water spinach. She also grows fruit trees in the garden such as grapefruit, guava, and banana, all of which are sold at the market.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Hop, head of Phu Ngoi village, said that Hang is a special case in the list of excellent students receiving encouragement awards from the village. Hang lost her mother when she was young and lives with her grandmother, who is also old and weak, and the family is classified as a near-poor household. "I hope that organizations in the village as well as outside will help the two of them, so that she can continue her studies to finish university and become a useful citizen for society."

During the first weeks away from home to study in Hanoi, Hang took the bus to visit her grandmother on the weekends. Knowing that she had chosen a school and class with high tuition fees made her grandmother worried. Hang said she was focusing on saving for a scholarship for the new school year and when she got used to the living environment, she would work part-time or tutor.

Hang has a hobby of reading books, which helps her to always have faith in life. The saying that Hang loves the most is: "It's okay not to have a dream, the important thing is that you are happy." Showing off a photo taken with her grandmother on graduation day, Hang said that her grandmother is a source of encouragement and the greatest happiness, thanks to her, Hang has a bright future ahead.
