Storm overlaps storm in the East Sea, causing widespread thunderstorms in the North

Typhoon No. 8 is forecast to make landfall in China, but its circulation will bring heavy rain to the North. At the same time, another tropical depression is emerging in the northwest Pacific Ocean that has the potential to strengthen into a storm.

On September 18, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, spoke with the press about the storm situation.

Video of Mr. Nguyen Van Huong talking with reporters:

Could you please tell us the meteorological agency's assessment of storm number 8 in the East Sea in the coming days and its possible impact on Vietnam?

Today (September 18), the tropical depression will move northwest and intensify into a storm, then move toward Guangdong province, China. By tomorrow afternoon and night (September 19), the storm will make landfall in Guangdong province, China, then move further inland, weaken into a low pressure area and gradually dissipate.

Thus, the possibility of the storm having a direct impact on Vietnam's mainland is low. However, due to the influence of the storm's circulation, the northeastern area of the North East Sea on September 18 - 19 will have strong winds of level 6 - 7, the area near the storm's center will have strong winds of level 8 - 9, and waves of 3 - 5 m high.

We believe that after the storm weakens into a low pressure area over mainland China, this low pressure area is likely to move towards our country and cause widespread thunderstorms in the North during the period from September 23 to 24.

A new tropical depression is currently appearing. Will it affect Vietnam, sir?

In addition to the current storm, there is a tropical depression in the Northwest Pacific Ocean that is likely to strengthen into a storm during the day and night of September 18.

Then around September 22, the storm is likely to move into the East Sea and directly affect the mainland of Vietnam from September 24 to 26. This is a strong storm, capable of causing strong winds and heavy rain in the Northern region and the Central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue.

We continue to monitor the development of the tropical depression that is likely to become a storm in the Northwest Binh Duong region.

How many more storms and tropical depressions will there be in the East Sea from now until the end of the year, sir?

From now until the end of 2025, we estimate that there will be about 5-7 storms and depressions operating in the East Sea, of which about 2-4 storms and tropical depressions are likely to directly affect mainland Vietnam.

Thank you very much!
