14 year old boy stabbed in chest by catfish spine

On February 9, news from the Soc Trang Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had successfully performed surgery on a 14-year-old boy who had a catfish barb stabbed into his chest.

Previously, on the afternoon of February 6, patient PLQT (14 years old, residing in Truong Khanh commune, Long Phu district, Soc Trang) was hospitalized in a state of being stabbed in the chest by a barb (thorn) of a catfish. There was a jagged wound of 0.5 cm between the 7th and 8th ribs and the right chest, touching a hard foreign object under the skin 2 cm from the wound; the second wound was about 0.2 cm on the front of the right arm touching the foreign object.

Relatives said that in the afternoon of the same day, T. went down to the pond to catch fish and was suddenly stabbed in the chest by a catfish about 50 cm long and weighing more than 5 kg.

After performing paraclinical tests and chest X-rays, the doctors consulted and performed surgery to remove a foreign object, a catfish spine about 3 cm long.

According to Dr. Quach Tong Lai, Department of Pediatric Surgery, Soc Trang Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, this is a rare case. If the catfish barb had penetrated deeper, it would have punctured the pleura, making surgery very complicated, prone to infection, and with a worse prognosis.

Through the case of a child being stabbed in the chest by a catfish barb, Dr. Lai recommends that parents pay special attention to their children. Catfish such as: Pangasius, Catfish, Catfish... are fish species with sharp barbs. When the fish struggles, the barbs can easily cause injury, pain, bleeding, infection... More seriously, when the fish stabs dangerous locations, it will seriously affect their health later on.
