According to neurologists, if the patient is treated within the first 4 or 5 hours for cerebral infarction, or within the first 6 hours for some cases of large vessel occlusion, the chance of recovery will be very high. However, in the past, due to limitations in diagnostic equipment and treatment techniques, most patients had to be transferred to higher levels, leading to missing the "golden time".
The medical team of the Neurology Department, Ca Mau General Hospital urgently received and treated a stroke patient during the "golden time".
With the investment of the health sector, in recent times, Ca Mau General Hospital has deployed many modern techniques, opening up hope for local people and neighboring areas in the treatment of this dangerous disease. Accordingly, the Department of Neurology has established a stroke emergency hotline. Upon receiving the call, the on-duty team immediately arrives at the Emergency Department within 5-10 minutes, quickly conducting imaging diagnosis and initial intervention steps. The on-duty doctor only takes a few minutes to determine the location of the blockage, thereby deciding on the appropriate treatment plan. Thanks to the urgent and professional process of the medical team, many patients admitted to the hospital with hemiplegia, difficulty speaking... have received timely emergency treatment, restored mobility, and can even walk on their own after a few days.
Doctors perform thrombectomy using mechanical instruments.
Along with shortening the emergency time, Ca Mau General Hospital also invested in a modern CT-MRI system, implementing many advanced treatment methods that are only performed at large hospitals such as: intravenous thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, creating a chance for patients to live, without having to transfer to a distant hospital. In parallel with emergency care, the hospital also established a specialized stroke unit, combining synchronous treatment, rehabilitation and psychological counseling, helping patients recover and return to normal life soon.
Modern CT-MRI systems help shorten diagnosis time, opening up the chance of life for many patients.
Dr. Vo Hoai Thuong, Department of Neurology, shared: “We have received active attention, direction and support from the hospital's Board of Directors, the Department of Health and close coordination between departments and rooms. The biggest difficulty now is that many patients come too late, beyond the "golden time" for brain revascularization. In addition, specialized human resources are limited, and existing equipment has not yet met the increasing demand.”
In addition to treatment, the Department of Neurology also coordinates with primary health care and media agencies to promote stroke prevention. People are instructed to control risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, etc. The department has posted signs of recognition and first aid for stroke, helping people access medical knowledge.
Advise the patient's relatives on early signs of stroke according to the FAST principle.
In the coming time, the department will continue to improve the professional qualifications of the team of doctors and nurses; train specialized human resources in neurointervention; propose to invest in more modern equipment to better serve the needs of emergency and treatment; expand the stroke emergency network at the grassroots health care level, helping patients shorten the time to access medical services.
Patients recover their mobility under the careful guidance of doctors and physical therapists.
“Along with improving treatment capacity, we continue to promote health education to the people, to limit the incidence and recurrence of stroke, because disease prevention is always the most important measure,” Dr. Vo Hoai Thuong emphasized.
