RT reported that on May 1, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu met with the country's top military officials to discuss the battlefield situation in the conflict with Ukraine, with special attention to weapons production.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Mr. Shoigu listened to a military briefing at the military headquarters in an undisclosed location. The meeting is said to have also focused on analyzing Ukraine's tactics.

Mr Shoigu also inspected modernised anti-drone weapons, with video released by the Russian Defence Ministry showing him standing near a double-barreled heavy machine gun fitted with a collimating sight.

The Russian Defense Minister ordered the country's military forces to "continue to carry out tasks in accordance with the plans for the special military operation." He also stressed the need to further increase the supply of equipment.

“To support the necessary offensive tempo… it is necessary to increase the quantity and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops,” Shoigu said.

According to Mr. Shoigu, to achieve this goal, the military has state contracts with defense contractors that need to prioritize reducing production times as quickly as possible.

He noted that the armed forces must address “urgent” issues in this area, especially regarding the production of weapons most frequently used on the battlefield.

The Russian Defense Minister also stressed that improving the efficiency of repair facilities and units is "especially necessary" , asking the relevant parties to reduce the time required to repair inoperative engines and other equipment, as well as replenish stocks of spare parts.

Last month, Mr. Shoigu announced that the Russian army had gained the initiative on the battlefield and taken control of several more settlements in Donbass (Ukraine).

On April 29, Ukraine's top general, Aleksandr Syrsky, admitted to withdrawing from some strongholds in the region.

Meanwhile, both Ukrainian officials and Western media have expressed deep concerns about the country’s ability to withstand a possible Russian summer offensive, despite the US recently approving a $61 billion aid package. Moscow has said military support will not help Kiev turn the tide in the conflict.
