Despite negative reviews and poor reviews from audiences, Disney's 35th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World, outperformed expectations and ranked as the film with the highest opening weekend of the year.

Internationally, Captain America: Brave New World earned another $92.4 million, bringing its global total to $192.4 million through February 17. "This is the first big weekend of 2025," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at media analytics and measurement firm Comscore.
In this $180 million blockbuster, Anthony Mackie takes over the role of Cap from Chris Evans. Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World puts Sam Wilson (Mackie) at the center of an international disaster following Thaddeus Ross's (Harrison Ford) presidential election.

Disney's Marvel movies tend to start strong. But recent installments in the franchise have received mixed reviews, like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania , Eternals , and The Marvels , which have tanked after debuting at No. 1 at the box office.
Marvel Studios, which is showing signs of weakening after the resounding success of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, will release two more blockbusters in the coming months: Thunderbolts on May 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25.

Sony's Paddington in Peru opened at No. 2 with $13 million. Sony's gory horror film Heart Eyes opened at No. 3 with $10 million. Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man held onto its No. 4 spot after two weeks at No. 1, earning another $9.73 million. To date, Dog Man has grossed $69.5 million in North America and $84.4 million worldwide against a $40 million budget.
Rounding out the top five is Ne Zha 2 – the animated film that was a huge hit in China with $1.6 billion in revenue and counting. The film earned $7.3 million in North America.
Captain America: Brave The World (Vietnamese title Captain America: The New World ) was released in Vietnamese theaters on February 14, earning more than 27 billion VND, according to data from Box Office Vietnam.
