Bui Bich Phuong, 18 years old, is one of the young female badminton players worth watching in Vietnam. This week, she participated in the Malaysia International Series and surprisingly reached the final.
The Vietnamese tennis player has had impressive victories. In the first round, she made the number 1 seed from Thailand "regret" with a 2-0 victory. In the round of 16 and quarter-finals, Bich Phuong defeated Hsieh Yu Tsen and Chen Han, both from Chinese Taipei.
In the semi-finals, she once again caused a shock when she defeated the 5th seed of Korean Kim Joo Eun to enter the final. In the match to decide the championship, Bich Phuong met another Korean player, Kim Seong Min.
These are two athletes who are not seeded, but still made it to the final. Kim Seong Min is rated higher, ranked 281st in the world , while Bui Bich Phuong, due to her young age, is only ranked 388th.
With her superior experience, the Korean player won 21-18 in set 1. Bui Bich Phuong played hard and won set 2 with a score of 21-15. But in the deciding set, Kim Seong Min was still the more accurate player. She won 21-14 and became the champion.
As for Bui Bich Phuong, even though she lost, the silver medal was an unexpected success. This result will also help her accumulate quite a lot of points to improve her ranking and aim for the next tournaments.
