Ca Mau deploys 1,500-hectare super-intensive shrimp farming model

(Chinhphu.vn) - On September 11, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province signed a cooperation agreement with De Heus Company and partners to replicate the RAS-IMTA circular shrimp farming model on a large scale. The RAS-IMTA shrimp farming model is a super-intensive shrimp farming model with recirculation, little water change, and bio-safety. The model has been piloted in phase 1 in Ca Mau with an area of 100 hectares of white-leg shrimp farming.

According to the Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau, the first phase of the project was successful, achieving a survival rate of 85-90%, a yield of 40-50 tons/ha/crop and a stocking density of up to 250-300 shrimp/m². The quality of farmed shrimp meets important factors, making it easy to export the product to demanding markets, such as the EU and the US. The product also achieved prestigious international certifications, such as ASC and BAP.

The model not only brings high economic efficiency, but is also a solution to environmental problems, with treated wastewater meeting standards, in line with the trend of aquaculture development towards green growth and circular economy.

After the initial success, Ca Mau province aims to build and deploy the project on a scale of 1,500 hectares in the coming time. De Heus Company will accompany the provincial authorities to continue to replicate the model to 1,000 hectares, expected to be deployed from 2025 to 2030.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vice Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su affirmed that a production model, even if it is environmentally friendly but not economically efficient, will be difficult to maintain in the long term. Therefore, the province focuses on applying technical solutions to increase productivity, reduce costs, improve product quality, and at the same time promote links between farming households and businesses producing seeds, supplying materials, processing and exporting. This approach helps farming households have quality seeds and feed at reasonable prices, and consume products directly to businesses, without going through traders, thereby increasing profits.

At the conference, delegates discussed many synchronous solutions to achieve the target of 1,500 hectares, especially the connection between banks, enterprises, cooperatives and farmers to remove capital difficulties and promote green credit.

Dr. Nguyen Nhut, Research Institute for Aquaculture 2, emphasized that the RAS-IMTA model has proven to be sustainable, especially from the 35th day of farming onwards, with low risks and increasing efficiency. However, he noted that farmers need to closely monitor and strictly follow technical procedures to achieve optimal results.

According to statistics, Ca Mau province leads the country in area, scale and shrimp farming output with over 427,000 hectares, the largest in the country.

Annual shrimp output reaches over 900,000 tons, export turnover is expected to reach 2.5 billion USD in 2025 and may exceed 3 billion USD in the following years.

In 2024, Vietnam's shrimp industry will achieve an export turnover of over 4 billion USD, an increase of 14% compared to 2023; of which, Ca Mau will reach 1.65 billion USD, Bac Lieu 1.21 billion USD, ranking top in the country.
