Phuc Trach grapefruit is grown mainly in Phuc Trach commune and some neighboring communes such as Huong Do and Huong Pho communes of Ha Tinh province with a total area of over 2,700 hectares. Estimated output in 2025 is about over 20,000 tons.
With its distinctive flavor, juicy, sweet, slightly spicy and mildly aromatic grapefruit segments, this type of grapefruit was once offered to the king and has now become a product with geographical indication protection, affirming its brand nationwide.
Phuc Trach grapefruit gardens are full of fruit.
Phuc Trach grapefruit flowers around February - March of the solar calendar. This is the time when the tree begins to differentiate flower buds after the dormant period. Grapefruit flowers bloom in late March and early April and require dry weather conditions with mild sunlight to facilitate natural pollination. Farmers often use additional hand pollination to increase the fruit set rate, especially for low-yielding or late-flowering trees.
Phuc Trach grapefruit is suitable for sandy, loose, well-drained hill soil. For the tree to grow well, farmers need to prune the branches periodically to create a canopy, help distribute light evenly, and limit pests and diseases.
Phuc Trach Commune is one of the localities growing the most of this grapefruit variety in Ha Tinh province with nearly 549 hectares, of which the harvested area is up to 470 hectares.
From around September, grapefruit growers begin to harvest the fruit.
Mr. Phan Xuan Hien's Phuc Trach grapefruit garden in Ngoc Boi village, Phuc Trach commune, with more than 1,000 trees has been harvested. This year's output is estimated at nearly 100 tons of fruit, bringing in an income of more than 500 million VND for his family.
“In recent years, thanks to the application of technical production processes, especially the application of organic production processes by gardeners, the quality has been improved, thereby increasing the economic value, and is favored by traders and customers. This year's output is estimated to reach nearly 100 tons of fruit, bringing in more than 500 million VND in income for the family,” Mr. Phan Xuan Hien happily shared.
Phuc Trach grapefruit is a staple crop in many mountainous communes of the old Huong Khe district.
Currently, the price of Phuc Trach grapefruit in the garden ranges from 20,000 - 40,000 VND/fruit depending on the type. Thanks to the brand reputation and outstanding quality, Phuc Trach grapefruit is strongly consumed in big cities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang...
Phan Anh Thai, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Phuc Trach Commune, said that the local output of Phuc Trach grapefruit this year is estimated at 6,580 tons. With prices ranging from 20,000 - 40,000 VND/fruit, this year's grapefruit price is lower than in 2024.
“Phuc Trach grapefruit is identified as a key crop for local socio-economic development. Growing grapefruit is creating the main source of income for farmers,” Mr. Thai emphasized.
Although this specialty fruit is now available on trading floors and in large supermarkets,
is spontaneous, consumption is unstable and precarious.
Also according to Deputy Head of Economic Department of Phuc Trach Commune Phan Anh Thai, although this is a specialty fruit that is now available on trading floors and large supermarkets in and outside the province, it is still spontaneous, each person does it on their own, with limited quantity. The connection of product consumption between enterprises, cooperatives and people is still difficult, there is no leading enterprise in product consumption. Product consumption is still unstable. The products produced are not uniform in quality and design. Most of the production area has not been produced according to any standards.
Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Phuc Trach Commune, Phan Anh Thai, said that in order to improve the quality and value of Phuc Trach Grapefruit in the market, it is necessary to implement many synchronous solutions to control varieties, planting techniques, care and harvesting to ensure beautiful appearance and stable quality. It is necessary to implement well and expand the area of Phuc Trach Grapefruit that meets VietGAP/GlobalGAP/organic standards in the area, both to confirm food safety and increase consumer confidence, and to apply traceability stamps and scan QR codes for consumers to check the origin and source of products to avoid counterfeit goods.
