Canada increases work opportunities for international students after graduation

Canada allows students in nine fields in the field of child care and development to stay and work for up to three years after completing their studies.

According to PIE News, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially expanded the list of eligible majors for international students to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Accordingly, students in nine majors in the field of child care and development are allowed to stay and work in Canada for up to three years after completing their studies.

The newly added fields of study include education, care management, child support, childcare provision and teaching assistantship. Previously, the PGWP-eligible fields of study included 966 occupation codes in high-demand fields such as agriculture , health care, STEM, trades and transportation.

In 2025, Canada expects to issue 437,000 study permits, down 10% from the previous year. International students applying for PGWPs need to achieve a minimum language level of B2 for university and B1 for college, along with a financial proof requirement of more than CAD 20,600 (USD 15,200), double the previous level.

Canada is currently one of the world's top two study abroad destinations, with over 1 million international students by 2023. Indian students account for about 40%, Chinese students account for 12%, and Vietnamese students contribute over 16,000 of this total.

Majors in the fields of information technology and computer science always attract a large number of students due to high demand for human resources and attractive salaries.

Engineering majors, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering, are also popular with students due to good career prospects and strong Canadian industry growth.

Business administration and finance are other popular choices, providing extensive knowledge and leadership and management skills, opening up career opportunities in multinational companies.
