The Ministry of Construction has just sent an official dispatch to the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Waterways Administration and Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port Joint Stock Company regarding the acceptance of container ships with a capacity of up to 232,494.5 DWT with reduced load.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Construction agreed in principle that Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port officially receives container ships with a capacity of up to 232,494.5 DWT as requested by the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Vietnam Waterways Administration, Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port Joint Stock Company.

The Maritime and Waterways Administration is required to only allow Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port to receive container ships with a capacity of up to 232,494.5 DWT when ensuring suitable conditions regarding existing shipping channels, natural conditions, operating conditions and other related contents to ensure safety of construction structures, maritime safety, maritime security, fire and explosion prevention and environmental pollution prevention.

Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port Joint Stock Company (investor) is responsible for complying with and fully implementing the instructions and guidance of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority, relevant agencies and units in the process of receiving ships into the port and is responsible for investment efficiency and responsibility in the process of receiving ships into the port if an incident occurs; does not require the Ministry of Construction to invest in and upgrade public maritime infrastructure in the area.

Previously, in October 2023, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (now the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration) approved a plan to ensure maritime safety for pilot exploitation of container ships with a tonnage of over 200,000 DWT to 232,494.5 DWT to reduce load and enter and exit cargo handling at Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link (also known as Gemalink Port).

Immediately after the decision to allow receiving large tonnage ships, Gemalink port made marketing efforts to convince shipping lines to establish direct shipping routes from Cai Mep to Europe, Africa and the US using mother ships - Mega Container Ships with a tonnage of over 200,000 DWT, including the world's leading shipping alliances such as Ocean Alliance (CMA, COSCO, EVERGREEN, OOCL), The Alliance (HAPAG LLOYD, ONE, HMM, YANGMING, MAERSK).

In just over 2 years, from March 2023 to May 31, 2025, Gemalink port has welcomed 1,055 ships, including 70 large container ships with a tonnage of over 200,000 DWT to 232,494.5 DWT, with reduced load entering and exiting to handle cargo in absolute safety according to the approved maritime safety assurance plan.

By receiving large ships into the port, it has helped the shipping line carry more goods at lower operating costs.

Port enterprises have more revenue, increasing investment efficiency. In addition, other revenues such as pilotage, maritime fees and maritime support are also higher and especially help increase the advantage for Vietnamese importers and exporters when goods can be exported directly to European and American countries faster and more cost-effectively instead of having to be transshipped in Singapore and Hong Kong as before.

“This is also an opportunity to turn Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster into a regional transit point and be ranked 7th in the group of most efficient container ports in the world,” said the leader of Gemalink port.
