In the communes of Dan Hai, Tien Dien, Nghi Xuan (Ha Tinh province), preliminary statistics show that about 70% of houses had their roofs blown off, many households had to be urgently evacuated to ensure safety. Among them, many policy families, poor households, and lonely elderly people were left homeless, having to take shelter from neighbors, living in anxiety and insecurity.
After the storm passed, the Coast Guard Region 1 Command urgently mobilized forces and means from its subordinate units, the core of which was Squadron 102, with nearly 100 officers and soldiers divided into many mobile teams to go to the villages that suffered heavy damage. The working teams focused on giving priority to helping policy households and the elderly and vulnerable people to re-tile roofs, rebuild outbuildings, and cover their belongings, so that people could soon stabilize their housing.
Ms. Duong Thi Huong - a martyr's family, residing in Xuan Linh 1 village, Nghi Xuan commune, Ha Tinh province, emotionally said: "Storm No. 10 caused the roof of my level 4 house to be completely blown away, and the cooling tent in front of the yard was also blown away. For the past few days, my children and I have had to stay at a neighbor's house and have always lived in fear and anxiety. There are only elderly people and children in the house. Luckily, thanks to the Coast Guard soldiers who came to help with the roofing, I have a place to soon stabilize my life. Thank you, Coast Guard soldiers."
Not only helping people re-roof their houses, officers and soldiers of Squadron 102 also worked closely with the local authorities and schools to clear up fallen trees, clean up the environment, and repair facilities. Thanks to that, teachers and students quickly returned to teaching and learning after many days of interruption due to the storm.
Before the storm hit, the Coast Guard Region 1 Command also mobilized nearly 200 officers and soldiers to the area to support people in storm prevention and control with practical actions: bracing houses, reinforcing dykes, and trimming trees at risk of falling. Thanks to that initiative, the damage was somewhat reduced.
On the roofs of houses with torn tiles, along the weak dikes or among the broken trees, the image of the Coast Guard soldiers with sweat dripping, hands and feet covered in mud but still persistent, diligent, meticulous in every smallest task has left a deep impression in the hearts of the people. It is not only timely support in terms of effort and material, but also a great source of spiritual encouragement, helping people to have more confidence to overcome difficulties.
The acts of kindness of officers and soldiers of the Coast Guard Region 1 Command have contributed to more clearly portraying the noble qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers", at the same time fostering solidarity between the army and the people, maintaining peace and helping people stabilize their lives soon after the storm.
