Update SKG according to 2-level government: Fix the least but ensure the most

The Vietnam Education Publishing House will adjust some of the contents of textbooks to suit the reality of merging provinces and cities, changing administrative boundaries and two-level government. The adjustment and updating will be done on the principle of ensuring the best fit but with the least corrections to keep textbooks stable so that students can still use textbooks published in previous years.

This is the sharing of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Tung, member of the Board of Members, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Education Publishing House.

Textbooks to be revised from the 2026-2027 school year

The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced a number of adjustments to the subject curriculum. The adjustments are aimed at adapting to changes in administrative boundaries and implementing two-level local government while also limiting the shortcomings of the curriculum after a round of innovation in all grades.

Specifically, for the Civic Education program: amend and supplement the 10th grade program on the topics " Political system of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" and "Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam".

For History subject: amend and supplement the optional study topic in grade 10 - the topic of Vietnamese State and law in history.

For the Geography sub-subject in History and Geography: amend and supplement the program in grades 4, 5, 8, 9 and Geography in grade 12, the main revisions are on socio-economic regions such as: regional boundaries; names and number of provinces and cities, area size, population of the region; economic development resources and development situation and distribution of economic sectors in socio-economic regions; administrative maps; population maps, maps of sectors and economic regions in Vietnam.

For the History sub-subject in History and Geography: amend and supplement the program in grade 7: the issue of historical divergence in feudal China; in grade 9: the division of stages in the renovation process in Vietnam from 1986 to present.

The revised curriculum and textbooks will be implemented from the 2026-2027 school year.

Editing should be pedagogical.

Vietnam Education Publishing House is currently the copyright holder of 2 out of 3 textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education and Training and being used in schools, including Creative Horizons and Connecting Knowledge with Life. This unit also holds over 70% of the textbook market share in the country.

Associate Professor Nguyen Van Tung said that as soon as the Party and State had a policy of merging provinces and cities and implementing a two-level government, the Vietnam Education Publishing House directed the editorial boards to coordinate with textbook authors to review the entire content of the textbooks. Some subjects have more adjusted content such as Geography, History, Civic Education... Some subjects have updated place names but less, such as Math, Literature...

Since then, the Vietnam Education Publishing House has had a set of documents with content that needs to be adjusted and updated according to new content and reported to the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education and Training will issue adjustments to the curriculum of a number of subjects to serve as a basis for publishers, including the Vietnam Education Publishing House, to edit and update textbooks for the 2026-2027 school year.

The leader of the Vietnam Education Publishing House said that adjusting and adding changed information to textbooks is not simply updating data but is a pedagogical and scientific transformation process, requiring accuracy and consistency in many stages. The revised information included in the books must be presented in an easy-to-understand manner, appropriate to the level of students at each grade level. In addition, it is also necessary to train teachers so that they can grasp and implement the new content effectively.

“The spirit is to update and adjust, but the principle is to keep textbooks stable so that students can still use textbooks published in previous years,” Mr. Tung said./.
